Corydoras barbatus, Quoy & Gaimard, 1824 Origin:South-America, Brazil, from Rio de Janeiro to Sao Paulo. Etymology: barbatus, bearded.
Corydoras barbatus started to show up in the Milwaukee area about eight years ago and since I had never had them before, I needed them. They were not cheap but fairly reasonable. I took home a half dozen of these beauties.
Corydoras barbatus is one of a few species of Corydoras that are not what we would term as being truly tropical. Their natural habitat is the fast flowing rivers that empty into Guanabara Bay in the State of Rio de Janeiro.
Corydoras barbatus SYN: Callichthys barbatus, Corydoras eigenmanni, C. kronei, Scleromystax barbatus, S. kronei PD: The body is stocky and deep, with an arched back. Two rows of bony plates make up each side of the fish.
- I was growing out Corydoras barbatus and some pandurini recently. I fed blackworms occasionally for the Corys with no sickness issues with the pandurini.
It was originally described as Callichthys barbatus by Jean René Constant Quoy & Joseph Paul Gaimard in 1824, from which it was transferred to genus Corydoras as Corydoras barbatus, ...
