Why Keep Corydoras?

Corydoras catfish come from a wide range of biotopes; from rocky rapids to slow-moving, muddy rivers.

Description: Corydoras catfish (Corydoras species, also known as cories) are small, peaceful, schooling catfish. Over 200 species of Corydoras species have been described, and over 50 species are available, although most remain poorly known.

Catfish Tank - Corydoras Catfish, Four Lined Pictus Catfish, Small Plecostomus Catfish, Pimelodella Catfish, Porthole Catfish, Rafles Catfish, Upside Down Catfish, Talking Catfish, Synodontis Catfish.

Corydoras Catfish do well in a group of 4 to 6 individuals. Tetras and other mid-water schooling fish look good in a group of maybe a dozen or so. A tank with ten or twenty fish, all of different species looks too jumbled and chaotic.

A Corydoras catfish can be kept with the parents to eat any leftover food particles.

Ideal companions include other Corydoras Catfishes (they would probably perform even more mirthful antics if kept with pygmaeus), various small Characins such as Cardinals and Lemons (both of which share my Pandas' home), ...

I have tried many types of tropicals in my pond, including zebra danios, serpae tetras, rainbows, corydoras catfish, ghost shrimp, killies, kribensis, keyhole cichlids, red devils, angelfish, and even discus.

Examples of tropical bottom feeding fish include Corydoras catfish, algae eating fish such as Plecostamus, Loaches, Crustaceans, Chinese Algae Eaters, Octocinclus and sharks.

Corydoras Catfish
Cory Cats are members of the family Callichthyidae, a family of armored catfish from South America. Corys are small (generally 2 1/2" long or less), schooling fish that are always searching the bottom of the tank for food.

Some, such as the endearing Corydoras catfish, seem to have a “live-and-let-live' outlook on life, getting along just fine with most other peaceful tankmates, while others seem to be perpetually scrapping for a fight.

I chose this fish to be the first Corydoras Catfish of the Month because to me it is the "classic" Cory. Not especially common, it's a find but not a rareity.
