Most of their scales are also ctenoid in form. The genus Diplioprion (tribe Diplioprionini) is comprised of two very unique soapfishes.

Cycloid and scales also known as ctenoid scales, are possessed by the vast majority of bony fishes and those with soft-rayed fins. They overlap each other, like roof tiles and are round and smooth.

Sexual dimorphism: Unknown. Probably males can be istinguished from the females by the number of ctenoids on the gill covers.

The eye-visible scales of the body are ctenoid, whereas the scales of the top of the head are cycloid. Kissing gouramis reach a maximum size of 30 cm (12 inches) total length.
