Cyprinids occur on all the continents except South America, Australia and Antarctica. This wide distribution suggests they had a long time to spread, and it is believed they separated from the Characiformes (characids) at some point very early on.

Cyprinids are highly important food fish; they are fished and farmed across Eurasia.

Running water Cyprinids can be kept in a tank with clear water which is well-filtered, slightly acid, and soft, at a temperature of 25-26°C.

White Clouds, Danios, Rasboras, and Barbs are all Asian fish related to the Carp and the Minnow. All of these fish belong to the family Cyprinidae. White Clouds, Danios, Rasboras, and Barbs are small, active, hardy, and colorful.

Barbs and danios belong to the large Cyprinid family of freshwater tropical fish which also includes all koi, carp, goldfish, and minnows. Tetras belong to the smaller Characin family.

It's actually a cyprinid with a sucking mouth adapted to hold onto rocks and such in swift currents. It will eat algae when youger, but increasingly turns to substrate feeding when mature.

Cyprinds belong to the order Cypriniformes and the family Cyprinidae. This order includes over 1,700 species and 220 genera of minnows and carp. The Cyprind family is the largest in the world, representing over 1400 species.

Minnows are a common species that belong to the Cyprinidae family. The common varieties are the White Cloud Mountain Minnow and the Fathead Minnow, which are often used as bait or feeder fish. Many consider all small fish used for bait as minnows.

Bala Shark
Not a shark at all but a Cyprinid (related to the Carp), Bala Sharks - Balantiocheilus melanopterus quickly outgrow most home aquaria. They get to be over one foot long.

In the home aquarium, this member of the Cyprinidae family prefers a well-planted aquarium with large open swimming areas. For best care, keep this peaceful fish in small schools with equally non-aggressive fish.

Barb is a general name given to fish usually belonging to the genera Puntius and Barbus, which in turn belong to the cyprinid family. Other similar fish in this family can also be referred to as barbs. Barbs are native to Asia and Africa.

Care should be very similar to a Bala Shark or other big Cyprinids. Be careful when choosing other fish, these guys can be somewhat unpredictable. Plants make the best decorations for this fish. Keep decorations towards the edges of the aquarium.
