Cyrtocara moorii is a peaceful cichlid, although it can be territorial. The aquarium should have caves and rocks to simulate its natural habitat, and sand as the substrate.

Description: Cyrtocara moorii is a beautiful, mild-tempered fish that is a delight to keep. It is commonly known in the hobby as the Malawi Blue Dolphin, and was once classified as Haplochromis moorii.

Live food is preferred over flakes. Beef heart is also a good food. The substrate should be of fine gravel as Cyrtocara moorii live in the sandy, shoreline areas of Lake Malawi. Caves are needed but swimming area is also important.

A pair of Cyrtocara moorii is spawning on a flat rock. The female has just dropped some eggs while the mail waits to take its turn. An Aulonocara stuartgranti mbenji is watching the process from a distance.

This species is found in all parts of Lake Malawi, it has always been a favourite with enthusiasts that keep Malawi cichlids.

The single species, Cyrtocara moorii, is endemic to Lake Malawi in east Africa. The species is popular amongst aquarium keepers where it is known as the humphead cichlid, blue dolphin cichlid, malawi dolphin or simply as moorii.
