What is Deionization?
Deionization is another type of water purification. The deionization unit works by utilizing a process known as "ion exchange".
Deionization: A process for filtering tap water before it is added to the aquarium. It comes with either separate or mixed-bed resins.

A process for filtering tap water of impurities before adding to the aquarium. Deionization removes important trace elements that should be replaced before adding to your aquarium.
Deionization can produce extremely high-quality water in terms of dissolved ions or minerals, but they do not generally remove organics and can become a breeding ground for bacteria.

A way to get very clean water for your tank is to purchase a filter that uses RO and DI, or Deionization. An RO/DI filter usually comes in 4 -stages, a carbon filter, mechanical filter, RO membrane, and a final DI cartridge.
4-stage RO units include an additional final step of deionization, taking the 3-stage unit to a higher level. The deionization unit removes the small amount of contaminants remaining, filtering the water to greater than 99.9% pure.
DI Water - Water that has been purified by deionization.

Depending on your water source, use of reverse osmosis, deionization or even distillation, your mains or tapwater may play a significant role in providing mineral nutrient to your aquatic plants.

Salinity - The number of dissolved grams of salt in 1,000gr of water.
There are two processes used for that: deionization or reverse osmosis.
KH = carbonate hardness (german K spelling)
PPM = parts per million
RO/DI = reverse osmosis/deionization
TDS = total dissolved solutes
TWP = tap water purification
