This was tested, and for freshwater systems, trickle filters just don't cut it, it takes a lot more than water gently flowing over some DLS to cause ammonia loss to the air, especially when the ammonia is almost 100% ammonium ions.

I even started out with a wet/dry DLS as the primary filter. That filter worked just fine for two years but then I grew tired of having to remove and clean the DLS pads every 3-6 months and the mess that created.
That is to say no DLS or Bio-Balls. Why ? I have mentioned that the advantage of the Dry section is that the bacteria's become quite effective when exposed to greater amounts of oxygen, and this is very true. Ironically they become too effective ! ...
