Sex differences: H. sp. Ruby Green "Albino" males have a yellow body with a bright red blaze across the dorsum and head. Females are white/yellow and do not show the red blaze.
As with all the members of the "Pananque" famliy, the males develop noticable Odontodes (protrusions from the body) along the Dorsum (top side of the body).

(Buccochromis) nototaenia: the noto- part is from Greek too, notos, the back, the dorsum. This fish has a stripe on its back (like so many Malawi cichlids!).
was able to distinguished Vaillantella cinnamomea from Vaillantella maaasi and Vaillantella euepiptera by counting the total dorsal fin and anal fin rays. In comparison to Vaillantella maaasi, it is light brown with a faint yellow-brown dorsum.
Females exihibit a reddish belly, that is completely surrounded by a bluish region, and a large golden-yellow blotch approaching the dorsum. This remarkable coloration is unique among P. taeniatus. P.
