Breeding: Dovii should not be attempted to breed unless you have adequate room for the eggs as once they are hatched they will need moved. The breeding process of Dovii is very brutal at times.
Dovii's are true piscavores and eat nothing but smaller fish in the wild. Feeder fish are considered good for dovii's in an aquarium as they satisfy their natural instinct to hunt, but extreme care should be taken with the quality of the fish offered.

I have had a Dovii for about 7 years now. When I got him he was about 5 cm and it was hard to tell if it was a male or female. As he grew to about 8 cm his color began to change and I knew he was male. At 13 cm his canine teeth began to show.

Do not be fooled by its scientific name "dovii", meaning peaceful dove. The body of this fish is pure muscle, which allows this very slender, lean cichlid to move extremely quickly and with great power.
Larger species of the group (namely Parachromis dovii and P. managuensis) are decidedly more piscivorous than their smaller cousins, P. friedrichstahli, P. motaguensis, and P. loisellei.
It is not advisable to house the Mayan cichlid with other cichlids from the Nandopsis group, such as the jaguar cichlid, Parachromis managuensis, the wolf cichlid, Parachromis dovii, or the Motagua cichlid, Parachromis motaguensis.
