Dropsy Treatment
The chances of survival with Dropsy are very, very low. Usually, by the time symptoms appear, internal organs have been far too damaged to be able to bring the fish back to good health.

Dropsy General Description
Dropsy is not really a disease. For all intensive purposes we will call it one. It's really an internal bacterial infection usually caused by poor water quality.

The approach to treatment is difficult since any one of a myriad of diseases must be considered as having a potential for being the underlying cause if dropsy , and treated appropriately.
Dropsy or Malawi Bloat
Visible Symptoms: Protruding scales, larger, swollen belly, base of fins become red, ulcers visible on fish's body, long and pale fecal casts, lack of hunger, darkening in color, pale colored gills and bulging eyes.
Dropsy - Characterized by a severely swollen or bloated abdomen and is believed to be caused primarily by poor water quality (high nitrate or sodium chloride levels) and malnutrition.
Dropsy (Aeromonas)
Dropsy usually takes one of two forms: body swells due to fluid accumulation, which causes scale protrusion, and also protrusion of the scales without the body swelling up - false dropsy.
Dropsy - Symptoms: Scales protruding at a 90° angle to the body; reddening of the vent area; and long, stringy faeces. Euthanasia may be in order.

Dropsy (Ascites)
Dropsy is more of a sympton than an actually disease yet, and is quite common. Most associated with a bacterial infection (cause could be wide - poor water conditions are often the culprit. Meds can be used, but dont always work.

So we have went from Constipation, to Swim Bladder Disorder, to Dropsy, to Septicemia. And NOW I am at a loss. We have done so much, water changes of 20% or more, at one point we did a complete water change removing all the old rock with new.

There appears to be a link between "Malawi Bloat" and overfeeding or inadequate roughage and "Dropsy" seems more common in dirty water type conditions. Good aquarium husbandry reduces the risk of these and most other problems.
