DSB

Aquarium Dry filterDuboisi

DSB - Deep Sand Bed. A sand bed Substrate deep enough to create anoxic areas in which denitrifying bacteria can reside. Used to keep nitrate levels low in an aquarium. See Plenum.

DSB / RDSB
See deep sand bed.
filter
A filter is anything that cleans water of debris, chemicals or organic waste. Most filters do this by forcing water through porous filter media.

DSB = deep sand bed
FO = fish-only (tank)
FOWLR = fish-only with live rock (tank)
LPS= large polyps stony (coral)
LR = live rock
LS = live sand
RTN = rapid tissue necrosis
SG = specific gravity
SPS = small polyps stony (coral) ...

Basically, a DSB is just that. Nothing more than lots of sand at the bottom of the tank, with nothing underneath it.
Most DSB depths range from 2" to 6", depending on how tall your tank is, how much swim room you need for your fish, ...

The tank was set up with a 4-5 inch DSB and live rock. It sat empty until January 2004 when my friend decided it was time to return his live rock. In the end, I was able to keep one rock from his collection.

If you do not stir up the sand bed, and have insufficient detrivores to do it for you, you risk a Deep Sand Bed (DSB) crash.
