So to give you an idea of the depth of the substrate you must consider the type of aquarium plants you are going to use. The deep-rooted ones will of course require the most depth.

Amazon Swordplant - Echinodorus bleheri - another large but very hardy plant, the Amazon Sword makes a great centerpiece for larger aquariums, but can be kept in smaller tanks with moderate lighting for quite some time.

The tank should be well planted, especially with plants that have large leaves, like Echinodorus species, in between which the leaf fish loves to hide.

This tank is planted with Rotala indica, Egeria najas, Cryptocoryne wilsii, Anubias nana, Anubias hastifolia, Nymphaea zenkeri 'Green' (Green Tiger Lotus), Microsorium tropica (Java Fern), Ceratophyllum demersum (Hornwort), and an Echinodorus osiris ...

Breeding Info= TANK: It is best if you have a high tank with a capacity of 38G (150L) per breeding pair, upright and slanting pieces of slate or glass panes and big leaved plants such as the genus Echinodorus.

The use of some large leafed plants like Anubias and Echinodorus, are especially good because of their large overhanging leaves, which will afford ideal roosting places. Floating plants will also add good cover and subdue the light.

Pygmy Chain Sword Echinodorus tenellus I usually have this plant growing in a number of tanks that are set up for long term use.
