Filter Carbon
What does filter carbon do? Carbon has the ability to "catch" certain chemicals that occur in water (or air, for that matter) by "adsorption".

Filter Replacing in a 500 lt tank
by Francesco Zezza
FOREWORD: I use to consider a tank like something alive (as a "whole thing", beyond live beings actually kept in it). In this respect, a tank, as a living organism is always changing and evolving.

A filter is quite possibly the most important piece of equipment in any aquarium.

Filtering Your Aquarium Water
Why Do I Need a Filter?
The purpose of a filter is to remove excess food, decaying organic matter, free-floating particulate, dangerous chemicals, and the fish's waste products from the water.

Filters Have Arrived!
Well tonight I picked up my filters from the post office and brought them home. To refresh your memory, they are an Eheim 2217 and a Unimax Pro 250.

The Filter Itself, and Maintenance
The notes above gave some of the reasoning behind the use of a plant refuge or vegetable filter, and a typical setup that I have used in several systems.

Sump Filters.
Usually a glass tank with partitions set in an up and under pattern. Water flows by gravity from the weir in the aquarium above and water is pumped back into the tank at the opposite end of the filter.

Eheim Filters
By Walter Spanner

Eheim Filter - Parts
Eheim filters have been around for a very long time now and have a very good reputation for quality and reliability. Perhaps that sounds like a sales ploy, but it is true.

Sump Filter
If you have the space , a sump filter is one of the best filtration you can set up.

Sponge filter. This type can be used as either the primary filter, or as a pre-filter for another filtration system. Air tubing is connected to the sponge on one end and to an air pump sitting outside the aquarium on the other end.

Sponge Filters
These are also an internal form of biological filtration. Water is pulled through a sponge and then pumped back into the water column. As the water flows through the sponge bacteria grows, as with the UGF.

Sponge Filters: These are simple air or water pump operated filters that drive water through a porous cellulose sponge which is a great media for cultivating beneficial bacteria.

Filter media is the content of a filter system which is in contact with the water flow and is the substance that actually performs the mechanical, biological, and chemical filtering.

Filters for aquariums come in all sorts of shapes, types and sizes, but they perform the same basic function, ...

A filter is essential for maintaining clear water in an aquarium. For fish that require extremely clear water, such as cichlids, more than one type of filter should be considered.

The filter features four filter pad slots, two on the right side and two on the left side. This ensures that all of the water passes through two pads. This also gives you the option of using some of the slots for media bags filled with carbon.

The filtering materials can be either natural - gravel, sand, clay, active carbon, peat, crushed oyster shells, rocks - or artificial - PVC, foam, Perlon, and various plastic materials.
Different materials correspond to specific functions.

Wet/Dry filters (figure 3)
When making a choice keep in mind that you need to accomplish at least mechanical and biological filtration. For small tanks (ie 10 gallon and under), corner "box" filters that sit inside the tank are generally used.

Wet/dry filters are not cheap, and because of this, the net contributors often come up with suggestions for rolling your own. Keep your eyes peeled for these messages. Filtration Related issues ...

Aquarium Filters benefit your pets health by keeping the water clean.
There are two ways they do this: ...

- Size of filter- the water should be circulated at least 4 times per hour.

Biological filter media provides a large surface area for live beneficial bacteria (nitrosommonas and nitrobacter) to cling to.

Wet Dry Trickle Filters
Back when the reef tank concept was introduced to the U.S in 1983 it consisted of a glass tank that had a filtration unit below.

So your typical filter would contain all three. A type of floss, the carbon media found inside the filter pack, or canister, and the bacteria flourishing on it. Your gravel and other items in you system will also include this bacteria.

The hang-on-tank filter is a very popular choice for most beginners because it is cost efficient and it is very easy to use.

Know Your Fish Tank Filters
Whether you have a freshwater or saltwater aquarium, a fish tank filter is a total must. All animals produce excrement either through respiring or from food waste.

Filter - A device used to clean the aquarium water. The three basic types are
Mechanical, Chemical, and Biological. All three types of filtering should be used
in your aquarium.

Filter Media
Most modern filters are modular, and you can vary the medium modules you use to fit your particular needs.

Filter Media
A particle or structure which is used for either the mechanical filtration of solid matter (by restricting its ability to pass between particles) or the substrate on which bacterial and/or algal colonies are formed, ...

Filter Socks : A must for most systems, filter bags for activated carbon or phosphate absorber are placed in the return from the overflow.

Filter Feeder: A small animal that feeds off food suspended in the water, and collects this food with the aid of hairs, specialized mouthparts, catch nets, or other structures.

Filter Feeder: An organism that filters out nutrients such as plankton, bacteria, or detritus from the water.
Filter Medium: Any substance used in water filtration systems to remove organic wastes and impurities from the water.

filter media
The actual substance water is pushed through that cleans it; usually kept inside a filter, though it can include things like gravel in the tank. Filter media range widely in type and form.

Prefilter: A prefilter is used mainly in marine tanks to remove large particles as the water leaves the tank, enroute to the sump.
Ray: The bones which make up the skeleton in the fins.

Box Filters - These are plastic boxes that are put in the corner of the tank. They also require the assistance of the air pump. This filter uses activated carbon and glass wool (or peat moss) to serve as biological filters.

Power Filter - A filter that usually hangs on the back of an aquarium. Contains a built in water pump that draws water up an intake tube from the aquarium into and through the filter medium and then returned back into the aquarium.

Sponge filters work by passing water over a highly porous sponge where bacteria are allowed to grow. They are almost purely biological with some mechanical filtration provided by the sponge itself.

sponge filter - A large foam rubber block connected to an air lift tube. Water is drawn through the sponge, which acts as a mechanical filter and a bacteria colony. Especially useful in breeding or fry tanks.

Filter Substrates can have an effect on water quality:
Temperature
Temperature is a very important part of a fish's environment. Improper temperatures can adversely affect a fish's health.

Filter/pump/powerhead Cleaning
Over time your filters and pumps and powerheads will accumulate a mass of gunk. It is good to clean this gunk out every 3-4 weeks. Just take out all the parts and rinse them with water. DO NOT use any chemicals! ...

Filters are rated for a range of tank sizes. Whenever a filter lists a range, like 20-40 gallons, it is really only good for the low end of the range. In this case, the filter would only be good for a 20 gallon tank.

Filters are not maintenance-free. For example, if debris is allowed to accumulate in a mechanical filter, it decomposes into ammonia, negating its primary purpose. Likewise, a biological filter's effectiveness diminishes as it becomes clogged.

Filter Medium - A substance used by the filter to remove waste from the water, examples are sponges and filter floss.
FOWLR - Fish Only With Live Rock, is exactly that. An aquarium that has no corals just fish and live rock.

The filter also does the duty of a chemical and mechanical filter. The latter two can be done by any type of power filter so they will not be an important issue here.

Peat-filtered water, a 2 gallon tank, and floating plants such as Java moss and Salvinia are all that are required for a successful spawn. A floating plastic tube of short length or similar may be used for the male to build his compact bubblenest in.

RO filters have become quite common and the bottled water dispensed in most grocery store machines is RO filtered. RO water is very pure and of the highest quality. It should contain virtually no hardness and be of neutral pH.

These filters usually sit on the floor below the tank, but also can hang on the tank, and in some designs even sit inside the tank, in which case they are called a ``submersible filter''.

Diatom Filters use a powder to charge the filter, the powder, diatomaceous earth consist of the skeletons of millions upon millions of two celled animals.

With box filters rinse some of the media in old aquarium water. Added water should be at the SAME TEMPERATURE as the old water. REVERT TO NORMAL CLEANING AFTER THIS PROCEDURE.

A sponge filter. This must be air powered (although I haven't tried it, I suspect a powerhead would damage eggs as they speedily passed through the impeller chamber) and tall enough to span both the breeding trap and the flowerpots.

Undergravel filters also work biologically, but are not as convenient to use in this instance.
