It is best to perform maintenance on the equipment during your regular water change and filter maintenance. At this time, the power to the equipment has been disconnected and the filter and pumps can be safely serviced.

 


Filter Maintenance
Since I do use external canisters, and tend to keep those for biofiltration only, I need easy access to the sponge prefilters I use to protect the biofilter itself.

Filter Maintenance : Check regularly to make sure that your filtration system works. I recommend cleaning your mechanical filter at least once a month.

Perform filter maintenance (preventative maintenance of moving parts, such as the impeller). Replace filter media (ex.: Carbon, Amrid, Phos-X, Peat, etc.) as per manufacturer's recommendations and in accordance with test kit results.

Provide filter maintenance when needed (changing cartridges, cleaning gravel, etc.) ...

I got a real shock this last weekend when doing filter maintenance, the white rubber seal that goeas around the internal intake pipe was soft and wrinkled.

Reverse Osmosis Water Filter Maintenance
You will need to perform maintenance on your RO unit periodically. How often hinges on how hard your water is and/or how many impurities are included.

Filter Maintenance
With the top of the aquarium open, evaporation is a concern, especially in our low humidity climate. We find that about one and one-half gallons of water evaporates per day.

Like other cichlids, poor water quality can cause Oscars to develop hole-in-the-head syndrome. Read more about HITH here. Simple water changes and routine filter maintenance should help avoid any such problems, though.
