Filter Media: How Mechanical, Biological, and Chemical Filter Media Function
Veterinary & Aquatic Services Department, Drs. Foster & Smith ...

Filter media is the content of a filter system which is in contact with the water flow and is the substance that actually performs the mechanical, biological, and chemical filtering.

Food and Filter Media in a Store Display
Most pet stores stock a wide variety of foods, so you can choose foods appropriate to your fish's dietary needs and still provide a good variety in your fish's diet.

Filter Media
Most modern filters are modular, and you can vary the medium modules you use to fit your particular needs.

Filter Media
A particle or structure which is used for either the mechanical filtration of solid matter (by restricting its ability to pass between particles) or the substrate on which bacterial and/or algal colonies are formed, ...

Filter Media Replacement
This is tricky. My best advice is to start out with the manufacturer's suggested media, replacements for mechanical media being done per their advice.

Filter Media - Various materials used in a Filter which remove particles and impurities from the water by mechanical, biological, and/or chemical means.

filter media
The actual substance water is pushed through that cleans it; usually kept inside a filter, though it can include things like gravel in the tank. Filter media range widely in type and form.

A filter media with small openings catches finer particles, but clogs faster. Also, as a rule, a physically large filter area will clog more slowly than a small filter. As the filter media gets dirty it will trap smaller and smaller particles.

The filter media compartment is easily reachable from the bottom.
At the moment (stock option) only two sponges are in use but there's enough room in the middle for an additional "filter cartridge" either from the manufacturer or - better yet - a "do ...

Biological filter media provides a large surface area for live beneficial bacteria (nitrosommonas and nitrobacter) to cling to.

Medicated filter media / live rock
If you end up medicating a tank with an antibiotic, it is likely to kill off the nitrifying colony.

Don't change the filter media - the beneficial bacteria are growing there. Don't disturb them until they have become well established.

Bio-Balls: A filter media used for the colonization of bacteria.
Bioconversion: Conversion of a plant standing crop storing the sun's energy to a fuel or energy source.

Do not change any filter media while cycling. If you chose a filter with a sponge or biowheel, when the filter needs cleaning, just remove, rinse in tank water you removed after a water change and replace. Do not rinse anything else.

When the water flow of the filter is significantly reduced, the filter media is then cleaned or replaced. Unless you have very special filtering requirements, the choice of a filtering unit and screening media is largely one of personal taste.

Filtration All good filters provide ample filter media surface areas for the colonization of aerobic (oxygen breathing) denitrifying bacteria which break down fish waste.

Canister Filter - An external filter using hoses and a pump to cycle the water from the aquarium thru the canister filled with different types of filter media.
Carbon - See Activated Carbon above.
Carbon Dioxide - (CO2) Used by plants as a nutrient.

For long moves (more than one day), either clean or discard your filter media. Pumps, heaters, etc. can be packed as any fragile appliance.
Move your tank.

Make sure you change or rinse the filter media often. The HOB filter will also give you plenty of circulation for S. bandensis - provided you get the right sized filter for the right sized tank. I use Aquaclear 500's on 20 gallon high tanks.

The system works by pulling water up through an intake tube via an impeller and pushing it through the filter media and back into the tank via an overflow lip. The media is where the AquaClear filters really shine.

A reasonable unit for a small pond might have a surface area of a square foot or more, and may use a variety of filter media including coarse and fine pads for mechanical filtration, carbon or zeolite for chemical filtration, ...

Adding some soft sponge filter media over the intake valve can help. Regular weekly water changes of 1/4 to 1/3 is strongly recommended to keep these fish healthy.
Use a smooth gravel substrate.

Cannister Filter: A filter which pushes water through an external canister which contains a filter media such as filter floss, polyester or carbon.

As in any biological filter the aim is to provide maximum surface area for bacterial colonisation, this is where live rock excels as a filter media.

This type consists of an intake tube, a pump, filter media (usually floss pads filled with carbon), and a slot where water is returned to the aquarium.

1/21/95 Replaced R/O filter media. Measured coral frags: M. digitata: 6cm x 4 cm; P. cactus 5.8cm x 5.1cm; A. elseyi: 4.6cm x 3.9cm; A. microthalmpta: 8.5cm x 6.3cm. I've been horribly neglecting this tank...

Some were as large as twenty four inches across, and held up to a gallon or two of water and filter media.

This is the reason why people like Schott invented Siporax, a filter media using something called sintered glass (haven't figured out what it is yet!!),
which is structurally diff. from crushed corals, bio-rings, etc.

The dirty aquarium water is first run through a relatively fine, disposable filter media to remove particulates. Then the water is allowed to drip through a very coarse media, such as pre-formed plastic balls or ceramic rings, while exposed to air.

Within the Overflow Box, or External Overflow, one places a filter media, such as a spiral filter pad, to separate or trap out the large pieces of debri's that are drawn into the overflow system.

Water is pushed through a strainer (filter media) which catches all free-floating particles unable to pass through the filter. Filter media includes filter floss, filter pads, gravel, and a sponge.

I recommend the use of Large external filters with biological filter media in it i.e. ehiem ehfi substrat. Ok so you break the ammonia and nitrite down to nitrates. You need an effective method for removing this from the water.

Trickle Filters - Biological filters where water is trickled over filter media and exposed to air to help the Nitrification process. Click here to read our filtration guide.
Turnover - The rate of how much water flows within an aquarium.

Diatom Filter: Filters which use a diatomic filter media. Diatoms are small single celled protists which have silica shells.
Dorsal Surface: The top part of the fish.

Introduction of bacteria is required however, and this is best done by seediong with gravel or filter media from an established aquarium and then introducing some biodegradible material to the tank like a pinch of fish food flakes once per week for ...

Increasing the buffer
will also increase the pH.

Canister Filter - An external filter using hoses and a pump to cycle the water from the
aquarium thru the canister filled with different types of filter media.

A nutrient that can case uncontrolled growth of algae in the aquarium. It can also be toxic in high concentrations and must be kept to a minimum in reef aquariums. Phosphate can be easily removed by a variety of commercial available filter media.

It is best to get a bacteria culture from an established saltwater tank. This can be in the form of some substrate, old filter media, or some macroalgae such as Caulerpa spp.. Live rocks are also an excellent source of nitrifying bacteria.

to rinse mechanical filters in an outside bucket of aquarium water to dislodge organic materials that contribute to nitrate problems, while preserving bacteria populations. Another safe practice consist on cleaning only one half of the filter media ...

Repeat the above steps bi-weekly or when wanting to remove visible sludge. To increase effectiveness, add directly into filter media, particularly activated carbon. Tidy Tank contains no hazardous chemicals or bacteria.

The length of time the water molecule is in actual contact with filter media in the filter chamber.
