Fire eels natural habitat is slow moving river environments with slow to briskly moving water and soft riverbeds.

The fire eel grows well in the aquarium. These fish are dark grey with red and yellow horizontal stripes extending down the body. The anal, caudal, and dorsal fins are all one continuous fin that are edged in red.

PD: An elongated fish with a pointed snout. The body is dark brown, while the belly is light gray-brown. The pattern varies from fish to fish.

These fish grow rather large so they are not realistically suited to an average sized aquarium. They prey on small fish.

They live with 2 very large fire eels, lots to neon tetras, cat fish, bushnose plecostamus, reproductive guppies, 2 siamese alge eaters, a couple of african water frogs, and more. The cool thing is that they started to reproduce too.

The genus Mastacembelus contains well-known spiny eels such as the Fire eel, Mastacembelus erythrotaenia, and Tyre-track eel, Mastacembelus armatus.

Oscars are of course one of the most popular fish that frequently outgrows its tankmates. Other "wonders" include most cichlids, arawanas, clown knife fish, tire track and fire eels, and Columbian cats (see "night gobblers").
