Fish foods often don't carry an expiration date, but they have a relatively short shelf life. Flake foods lose much of their nutritional value in as little as a month, so purchase only what you can use in a few weeks.

Some items which I've added to the worm bin have been fish food, cereal, tea bags, apple and pear cores, cantaloupe with skin, strawberry tops, lettuce, banana peels...almost anything goes.

4. CYCLING THE TANK : Now that you have bought the aquarium and the equipment, you need to arrange the gravel and your equipment in your tank.

Fish food is somewhat delicate. Exposing it to sunlight, leaving the lid off so that damp can come in, or buying a very large container that takes 8 months to use up all can sabotage the nutritional value of your fish's food.

Some fish food manufacturers have recently realized that there is a market for specialized Pleco foods and now sell products such as sinking algae wafers which fit this bill nicely.

Uneaten Fish food (use sparingly):
One subtle way of fertilizing that occurs is through small amounts of uneaten fish food and from fish excretions.

Special goldfish food has a lower protein and higher carbohydrate content. It is sold in two consistencies - flakes that float at the top of the aquarium, and pellets that sink slowly to the bottom.
