Fishless Cycle Diary
This is the way to set-up your aquarium - guaranteed. Fishless cycling is much easier and faster then attempting to starting up the nitrogen cycle in the traditional way, I have no doubt.

Introduction
Before we can have a discussion of fishless cycle, we need to make sure everyone understands what we mean by the term "cycle." The Nitrogen Cycle is the most important thing we need to understand as fishkeepers.
Fishless Cycle - To Cycle an aquatic system without live fish, using chemical or household ammonia, or decaying material such as fish food or a piece of shrimp to promote the establishment of nitrifying bacteria (as Biofilm). See article.

The speed of the fishless cycle is one of its major advantages. To cycle a tank with starter fish usually takes between 4-6 weeks.
Remember to do a fishless cycle on your new tank before adding the fish! Your tank may look empty with your baby fish in it but they will grow quickly and fill it nicely.
Advantages of the Fishless Cycle:
The advantages of this process over the traditional method of cycling a tank using a few small, hardy fish to get the bacterial colonies up and running all result from "front-end loading" the tank.
When changing the water during a fishless cycle, do NOT use dechlorinators that also sequester ammonia, such as the very popular Amquel.
(There is a alternative to cycling the tank this way, it is called the fishless cycle.
Other cycling methods that have gained popularity in recent years are the fishless cycle and the silent cycle. As the name of the former implies, no fish are kept in a tank undergoing a fishless cycle.
No fish are kept in a tank undergoing a fishless cycle. Instead, small amounts of ammonia are added to the tank to feed the bacteria being cultured. During this process, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels are tested to monitor progress.
No water changes are required during the fishless cycle
In order for the tank to be ready for fish, it must be cycled first.
This means establishing the biological filter.

This is my first cichlid aquarium, and it's getting me back into the hobby as I had not had an aquarium for the past 15 years or so. This aquarium finished a fishless cycle on January 2nd and then I stocked it with some fish on January 5th.

Fishless Cycle - Almost the same as above but you don't put any fish in until it cycles completely approximately 30 days. What you do is add ammonia.
