Flying Fox

Aquarium Fluorescent lightingFoam fractionation

Flying Foxes are generally loners and need their space. They generally aren't aggressive and make a good addition to the medium-sized community aquarium. Plants and driftwood are highly recommended, as they spend most of the day resting or grazing.

This fish is often confused with similar-looking Crossocheilus and Garra species. The Flying Fox, however, is not as useful in controlling algae as Crossocheilus species such as C. siamensis.

The most commonly seen is Epalzeorhynchos kallopterus, commonly known as the Flying Fox. The Flying Fox is the more attractive of the two.

By Carps, I mean fishes like Barbs, Danios and Rasboras, Flying Foxes, Bala Sharks etc. India is also the easternmost distribution of the cichlid family.

The "Flying Fox" will stop eating algae at older age and become hostile towards other fish, even of its own kind, while the SAE lives peacefully and eats algae throughout its life cycle.

Not to be confused with the Flying Fox or False Siamese Algae Eater - A true Siamese Algae Eater has clear see through fins and the black lateral line runs right to the end of the tail.

The Flying Fox is just one look-alike that does not eat algae to the same extent an SAE does. True SAE's have a black band down their middle, but this black band has rough edges. The stripe also extends onto the tail, which is almost clear otherwise.

Try a Chinese Algae Eater or a Flying Fox
Try a Pleco if your tank is large. Unfortunately plecos grow quite large and like algae less as they grow older.

The Siamese Algae Eater is also known as the Siamese Flying Fox. Ignoring other species, this fish tends to stay by himself.
It prefers a planted aquarium with many broad-leaved plants on which it can rest on.

One of the most common is the Plecostomus, but others include the Siamese Flying Fox and Octocinclus. Some people will add snails to their tanks to keep it clean. However, snails can become a problem just as quickly as algae can.

It also contains such fishes as the flying fox, daces, asps, log suckers, roachs, and chubs. Goldfish and Koi are also part of the Cyprinid family, but are included in their own section, see Goldfish.

This fish will only eat hair algae, a specific variety that will not usually be eaten by other algae eaters. The Flying Fox will need to be fed other foods. Typical meaty fish foods will work just fine.

In 1998 [Yang & Winterbottom] it was moved to the present genus Epalzeorhynchos [erected by Bleeker, 1855] which contains five species, two of which are the rainbow shark (E. frenatum) and the Flying Fox (E. kalopterus).

Typical choices for fish could be smaller tetras or rasboras and some angelfish. It would also be suggested in this type of set-up to include some algae controlling species of fish, such as Siamese Flying Fox.

Similar looking fish, like the Chinese Algae Eater or Flying Fox won't touch it. c.(Update)It would be nice to just drop a tablet of an algaecide and have it clear up in a few days.
