FOWLR

Aquarium Four-EyesFr

FOWLR stands for "Fish Only With Live Rock", and refers to marine/saltwater tanks that have live rock, but do not have coral or invertebrates, the live rock is there to aid the water parameters and filtration.

FOWLR systems with aggressive fish
Many aggressive fish, though beautiful, will create havoc in a confined reef system with invertebrates and live corals, but in a live rock aquarium, you can enjoy their unique splendor without worry.

Frag - Short for Fragment, so a coral frag will be a piece of another coral.
Fuge - Another word used for refugium, see refugium.

I thought I would begin my salt water adventure with a FOWLR and maybe add in a few soft corals to sway back and forth in the flow. I had seen this kind of display at some fish stores and thought they looked pretty cool.

Generally, for FO (fish-only) or FOWLR (fish-only with live rock), it is not really necessary to cool the water.
Having said that, fish will generally also do better with slightly cooler water.
At higher temp.

Somewhere under 10ppm in Reef aquaria (Fish and Inverts) and anywhere below 20ppm in Fish only or FOWLR (Fish Only With Live Rock) systems. Ideally however a reading of 0ppm or close is the optimum and certainly achievable in many systems.

If attempted, provide a spacious fish-only or FOWLR setup of at least 75 gallons, preferably larger, and choose peaceful but active fish companions.
