Freshwater Ray

Aquarium Freshwater Moray EelFreshwater Stingray

The Marbled Hatchetfish, Carnegiella strigata, is a freshwater ray-finned fish native to South America. It is usually around 35 mm in length, and unusually shaped.

In the last few years freshwater rays have become increasingly available and popular and tanks have become larger and cheaper, making them a reasonable pet for the dedicated home aquarist.

They are very hardy as far as freshwater rays go and stay pretty small in comparison with other freshwater rays. They accept a variety of foods and adore earthworms. This by far is my favorite species and I've successfully bred them in the past.

The Marbled Hatchet fish, is a small, freshwater ray-finned fish native to South America and is common in the aquarium industry. Like most Amazonian fish, the species prefers softer, acidic water.

Freshwater rays have internal fertilization. They fry can be sensetive and excellent water quality is a necessity. They are easy to sex as the females lack the modified pelvic fins for genetic transference that are found among males.

Fish body height > 5 cm; catfish or freshwater ray : H = 20 cm + (FH x 2)
Thus, for fish over 20-25 cm in adult body length the tank size should be calculated by the formula L x W x H as previously described.

The families included here contain some of the more interesting fish like the sturgeon fish, lungfish, gars and pikes. Other fish that do fit here, but that we have devoted their own section to, include bichers and freshwater rays.
