The freshwater Stingray can be an interesting addition to the aquarium. Despite the frightening name, this fish is very peaceful.

 


FRESHWATER STINGRAYS
A Few words on origin, evolution, and original biotopes: Freshwater stingrays, as odd as it may seem, are much closer - from an evolutional point of view - to Pacific rays than to their counterparts living in the Atlantic.

Just like their relatives Sharks and marine Rays, male freshwater stingrays have claspers, one on either side of the base of the tail and slightly underneath.

This kind of freshwater stingray Himantura chaophraya wasn't actually recognized to scientific disciplines till 1990. This particular Tropical Fish stingray is usually present in parts of Indonesia along with Malaysia.

I've owned various species of freshwater stingrays for about five years now. Currently I own four species including the several of the one pictured above commonly reffered to as a 'TEA-CUP' ray.

*Sole species may pose a physical or public health threat, such as piranhas and freshwater stingrays.

Freshwater Stingray (Potamotrygon laticeps): Eh? I could actually have a freshwater stingray, you are thinking, and you would be right in that assumption - but they are very rare and many have had difficulty in breeding them in captivity.

The Spotted River Stingray is said to be one of the hardiest freshwater stingray. The Motoro stingray need to have perfect water quality they are sensitive to water quality.

Fish, crustaceans and literally anything that it finds tasty and small enough to eat. I have personally witnessed one of the fish pictured above eat a large freshwater stingray head first!
Furniture
Large secured pieces of bogwood and rock.

Other livebearing species kept by aquarists, though far less commonly than the Poeciliidae are the splitfins, family Goodeidae; the halfbeaks, family Hemirhamphidae; and the four-eyed fish Anableps anableps, family Anablepidae. Freshwater stingrays ...

Do go if you want something unusual. I like to just look at all the rare things they carry...afterall, I don't have the ability to keep freshwater stingrays or a 36" Arowana but its nice to look at them anyways.
