Native to South America: Peruvian Amazon (Ref. 6329), middle Amazon, Guyanas and Venezuela.

Gasteropelecus sternicla prefers a planted aquarium with a few floating plants. A schooling fish, the Silver Hatchet is best kept in a group of six or more. A hood on the aquarium is necessary, as this fish likes to jump.

Description: Gasteropelecus Sternicla are a more unusual freshwater fish, Much resembling a hatchet (axe) they have thin deep bodies, upturned mouths and high pectoral fins.
