that are passed on through the gene pool by the "female".. and "not" the male. The fish we have today are the direct descendants of a long line of mixed bag Guppies, among which were possibly some highly bred strains that took years to perfect.

gene-- hereditary element that gets segregated
allele : particular form of a gene - a single gene may have multiple alleles (two in the case of diploid organisms like humans and fish). Alleles carry specific information about a trait, eg eye colour.

The gene that creates marble patterning is becoming more common, it is usually a colour such as blue or red on a pale base. A marble Betta has irregular patterns throughout the body and fins, that can change with age.

Horizontal gene transfer makes it even more difficult to define the word "species".

Figure 1. A gene tree of zooxanthellae clades showing how different clades are related to each another. This is a synthesis of works performed by Coffroth and Santos (2005), and is based on ITS analyses.

Over time, isolated populations can develop >differences in chromosome count, or differences in gene arrangement on the >chromosomes. How this happens, I don''t have a clue. Maybe Dr. Uwe can >handle the technical part of this answer.

Also if you are breeding for color or tail make sure that both parents have or show that gene.

The scientists had to literally sit by the aquarium and wait for the fish to spawn so that the gene fragments could be immediately inserted into the Convict cichlid eggs. If it is not injected immediately, the results don't seem to take..

It hasn't yet been proven, but there is a link between the Melano gene and the females' reproductive system that makes them infertile. To get blacks, the best combination is to cross a Melano male to a Steel Blue female.

Isn't it a proven theory, that when a gene pool is mixed that the inherient problems are less likely to manifest? The dog 'Industry' as you put it is rife with dogs who have genetic faults, which breeders and judges deem 'perfect'.

This is because of a smaller gene pool. In fact the world's crystal red shrimps all has the common ancestors from from a breeder in Japan who found 3 redder varients in his thousands of normal bee shrimps.

Culling basically means removing the fry from the gene pool you're trying to breed for.
For example, say I'm breeding guppies and I want only guppies with blue tails.

Parapatric Speciation: The differentiation into distinct species of populations experiencing some gene flow.
Parasite: An organism living on or in, and negatively affecting, another organism.

We swapped our fish to increase the gene pool and the fish is now being distributed, quite the world over. Some wild caught also found their way on the shelf in Bangkok fish market occasionally.

(cloning) by the females as it's quicker so more can be pumped out to quickly populate the area but in the winter dont try farming them as it's all sexual as they want to get hardier young that are used to the cold so they need to mix the gene pool ...

They can be crossed with guppies, but the hybrid offspring are sterile and considered to dilute the gene pool and so this is avoided by fish breeders. Many fish sold in pet stores as Endler's livebearers are actually these hybrids.
