I have kept some gold and german blue rams for a long time, and I have had only one problem, they got ich. They did survive through it though.

German Blue Rams?
In most of the United States the name German Blue Ram has become the standard label to apply to any of the farm raised Rams that are commonly available. Typically, these fish are stouter and more robust than wild fish.

The German Blue Ram is prized for its winning personality despite its fierce appearance. With its spiked dorsal fin, low-slung pectoral fins, and mottled deep blue splotches of color, Papilochromis ramirezi appears to be an aquarium bulldog.

The "German Blue Ram" has become one of the more popular dwarf cichlids found at your local fish stores today.

(although this was not originally the species name given, and has been confused with the German Blue Ram before the Bolivian ram was introduced to the hobby, specific articles on the web has proved difficult.

They are kept with German blue rams so I'm sure I've lost many. Really haven't done anything special to get this result. Amazing clean-up crew!!! From: Jenny Mallett

Kept these for the last year, pH of 8, nitrate 40ppm.

To add to this line of comments, I've found that my German Blue Rams gave me some interesting behavior for dwarf Cichlids.

The fish include: 10 harlequin rasboras, 2 SAE's, 5 otocinclus, 6 corydoras, 4 german blue rams, a few killi fish, and 6 cardina japonica shrimp. I don't gravel vac too often.

The Tiger Barbs would kill off the shrimp, and puffers are best kept in brackish water setups if not full marine conditions. I would say you can add 2 German Blue Ram Cichlids or 2 Bolivian Ram Cichlids, they should do ok with the barbs.
