GH - Total Hardness (also referred to as General Hardness). A measurement of the amount of magnesium and calcium dissolved in water. Expressed in degrees of hardness. One degree of hardness equals 17.9 ppm.

[edit] °GH - General Hardness
General, total or permanent hardness is a measure of the overall concentration of calcium, magnesium and other ions. It's measured in degrees, with one degree equal to about 17.9mg/l (17.86mg/l).

Testing GH API test kits are commonly used for this. If so, the oDegrees of Hardness equate to how many drops of tester solution are needed to read the results. Fill the test tube up with 5mls of tank water. Add drops (1 by one, shaken).

GH / KH A GH value over 10 is a good starting point (moderately hard water).

GH - General Hardness
Ideal Value = possibly variable by species of fish in freshwater, not applicable in saltwater
Acceptable range = 5-15 dKH in freshwater, off the chart in saltwater ...

Note: GH, KH and pH form the Bermuda's Triangle of water chemistry. Although the three properties are distinct, they all interact with each other to varying degrees, making it difficult to adjust one without impacting the other.

Marine parameters
The following chart is a general guideline of acceptable water parameter ranges for different types of tropical marine aquariums.

And also GH booster, or calcium chloride (pool hardness increaser) and magnesium sulfate (epsom salts) if your GH is below 4 degrees.

When the KH+GH tablets are dissolved in water, they form a milky solution that is useful for determining water flow patterns. The solution was poured in the trickle filter sump and monitored as it was dispersed by the water currents.

In pH of 7, GH 10 and KH 5 my fish are breeding and showing full coloration. They are laying their eggs in large clumps of Java moss. From: Sary

These are AWESOME fish!!! It took me forever to find one, however.

For example, tank items may slowly leach ions into your tank's water, raising the GH and KH (and pH). With driftwood, it is not uncommon to have the wood slowly leach tannins that lower the pH.

2 GH = 6 spawning. Followed the typical ''T'' formation two days after a water change which reduced the temp. by 6deg F. A total of 80 1,5mm diameter eggs were laid between three and five at a time. The eggs were all deposited on the tank sides.

8 and the GH 12 to 30. They don't really like soft acidic water like the small Tetras and this should be kept in mind when choosing fish. Most are quite adaptable so if they are acclimatised properly they will accept a variety of conditions.

(ie;calcium, magnesium, etc) 100 ppm GH is average. Discus need plenty space, and 150 litres is recommended as the minimum tank size for one single Discus.

Of the two types, there is General Hardness (GH), which refers to the total quantities of ions dissolved in the water and Carbonate Hardness (KH - the standard adopted is German, in which 'carbonate' is spelt with a K...) which deals with the ...

Feeding
In the wild, these fish are primarily piscivores (fish eaters). In the aquarium, this can be provided for with baitfish such as whitebait, lance fish, silversides etc, and mussel, prawn/shrimp, etc.

To find out test the GH, KH and PH of your water.
Whether you are lowering or raising your PH uses products that have a buffer in them. This will help you slowly and safely adjust your PH.

The two different types of hardness KH and GH are often confused. Carbonate hardness is the concentration of carbonates (CaCO3) in the water and general hardness refers to the dissolved minerals like calcium and magnesium in the water.

"Water quality is not really important, but the hardness should not exceed 10 GH degrees. Concerning the pH, it has no effect and the fish will spawn with a value of 6 as well as 7.5. The temperature should be between 25 and 28 Celsius degrees.

I keep the smaller Nothobranchius species in breeding tanks of 30x20x20cm size (tap water pH 7.8, GH 22 and KH 18). These water specifications have emerged as optimal for most species. I feed (almost) exclusively frozen red mosquito larvae.

3 and the GH was 3*. I had no problems getting my fish to spawn but I did have lots of trouble getting the fish out of the tank. Black Tetras really do hate nets!! ...

Units: German Hardness, dH, Carbonate Hardness (KH) and (for freshwater) General Hardness (GH).

Being from a lake that has been unchanged for nearly 20 million years, it is no surprise they are sensitive to changes or deterioration in water chemistry. They do need a pH between 8.5to9.4 GH and KH are not as critical as pH as long as it is kept ...

They provide the information necessary for tailoring characteristics such as pH, Carbonate Hardness (KH), Iron (Fe) and General Hardness (GH) that are important for the particular type of aquarium being maintained.
