Gill

Aquarium Giant Whiptail CatfishGill arches

Skin / Gill Flukes General Description
Like many parasitic diseases, the fish is not likely to be affected unless it is stressed or sick. They are tiny worm-like parasites that are rarely seen by the naked eye.

Gill arch
one of the bony (or cartilage) arches or curved bars extending dorsoventrally (out the side) and placed one behind another on each side
of the pharynx (throat) and supporting the gills.

Gill Netting: The process of catching fish by a net which catches the gills of the fish, trapping them inside.

Gill - A structure that allows an orgasm to breath underwater. They are variable in length and form; from thread-like to plate-like.
Glossa - One of a pair of two lobes near the middle of an insects mouth.

Gill Arches
The bony structure which supports the gill lamellae. Attached to the branchio cranium.
Gill Cover ...

Gill: This is the respiratory organs used by fish. It allows dissolved oxygen to be extracted from the water in which the fish swim.
Gill Cover: A hard, bony plate which covers the gills.

Gill cover A hard bony plate covering the gills.
Top
H
Hard water Water with a high concentration of dissolved salts.

Gill disease
DISEASE Infection with certain fungi (such as Branchiomyces), bacteria, protozoans and monogenetic flukes (like Dactylogyrus) and / or poor water quality.

Gill flukes Tremotode parasites, such as Dactylogyrus, that in severe infestation cause rapid breathing and gaping gills.

Gill Rot is named thus as it it appears initially in the Gill region as white patches.
If not treated the fish will usually die.

Gill Worm (Dactylogyrus)
This is another parasite. Use anti-parasite drugs as directed.

Its gill openings include an unusual spout-like structure found immediately below the base of the pectoral fin.

Rapid gill movement
Also known as 'brown blood disease' because the blood turns brown from a increase of methemoglobin. However, methemoglobin causes a more serious problem than changing the color of the blood.

it has gill flukes
it's gills have been damaged
there are high ammonia or nitrite levels in the water
there is little dissolved oxygen in the water
the temperature is too high
another fish chases it whenever it comes down ...

Look at the gill plates and on male fish it will look like it has ich only on the gill plates and on the pectoral fins.... j ...

Callichthys aeneus (Gill, 1858)
Hoplosoma aeneum (Gill, 1858)
The bronze corydoras (Corydoras aeneus), bronze catfish, lightspot corydoras or wavy catfish is a tropical freshwater fish in the "armored catfish" (Callichthyidae) family.

The eye is bright blue and a dark bar runs from the eye, back to the gill cover. A gold spot is located just above this marking. The fins have blue-white edges.
SIZE: To 4" (10 cm)
SS: Savoryi (N. savoryi), Daffodil Brichardi ( Neolamprologus sp.

As for the female's breathing problems, I wonder if she might be infested with gill parasites. All fish have them all of the time (sort of like the cold virus in humans).

The body, from the gill cover to the stripes, including the forehead, is yellow. The fins, except for the pectoral, are yellow with the tail also having a marbling of blue. The pectoral fins are transparent.

The belly to the gill plates is white. The males are slender, with very long gonopodiums. Just for fun, the gonopodium is twice the size of a guppy's! It usually spans one third the length of the fish. The females are much bulkier.

Similarly, keeping fish that require some salt in their water in freshwater can cause skin, gill, and digestive system damage as the cells in this exposed tissue rupture from taking in too much water.

Currently I am working with some store bought guppies, one of my males has a green colored body with a snake skin pattern that starts right behind the gill plates and carries on back to the beginning of the tail, hence its name "green snake skin".

Assuming that desirable choices for first fish can be found, the beginner should carefully inspect the specimens for sunken bellies, sunken eyes, clamped fins, labored breathing (often with gill covers quite extended), ...

The elevated temperatures put an extra strain on the fish’s respiratory system, given that gill function may already be impaired due to ich parasites in the gill lamellae.

Chandler's research requires regular sampling of these sites with gill nets. At each site, one net is set along the shoreline in shallow water; a second is set parallel to the first about 20 meters offshore; and a third is set ca.

Signs of HITH are usually very easy to see as the fish has lesions on it's lateral lines, or just above the gill plates. Until treated, the lesions will continue to grow, sometimes causing death.

If oxygen is decreased there will become a stress factor that usually shows up as a form of gill disorder or breathing problem in your fish.

0 and above, ammonia irritates the gill tissues of fish, and even at
moderate levels, can cause death. At pH levels below 7.0, ammonia is present in the
form of ammonium, and is much less toxic.) These ammonia levels will increase for ...

Symptoms include rapid gill movement and scratching against objects. This is caused by a one-celled parasite. The tiny white grains of salt are actually calcium cysts secreted by the parasites to protect them while they feed.

Betta climacura is close in appearance to a shortened Betta pugnax, the males showing the green iridescence on the operculum (gill covering). The male is generally a little smaller. The difference is the lateral bands exhibited by these fish.

There will usually be a vibrantly bright pink area just under and slightly behind the gill plate. The fins will be speckled. The eyes may be red. The will be three spots...one on the head, another at mid-body, and one at the base of the tail.

perches) containing four genera, the common name comes from the fish's ability to climb out of the water and travel on land considerable distances (some have been observed climbing trees) by pushing itself with the fins and tail and using its gill ...

The vibrantly iridescent blue "freckles" on the face on gill plates are what give this fish its distinctive common name. The dorsal, caudal and tailfin show a spectacular shade of blue and often hints of green.

Breeding A female Salvini Cichlid is usually distinguished by a dark spot located on her gill covers or a dark patch on her dorsal fin, while males normally have more pointed tips to their anal and dorsal fins and brighter coloration.

The major problem with Discus is their susceptibility to parasites like gill flakes as well as intestinal worms and flagellates.

Quicker and deeper movement of the gill cover could indicate oxygen depletion, anemia , parasites on the gills or poisoning.
Fish rubbing themselves against objects in the aquarium indicate skin irritation, Which could be caused by parasites ...

Both classes are defined as having cartilaginous skeletons, multiple gill slits, a rough skin consisting of teeth like scales, and continually growing new rows of teeth.

after a few days he got a really swollen gill one side only. it came up like a boil. it smeemed to burst then there was a massive whole there all the gill was exposed. do you know what it is and what caused it?

It has spiny edges on its gill plates. By extending the plates and using a clumsy rocking motion, it can make fairly good progress out of water. In its native habitat it is said to travel overland in search of a new pond if its own dries up.

Does the fish have visible parasites (worms, gill flukes, leeches, etc.) or white spots on the body of the fish?
No.
Yes: fish has parasites.

"Matumbi Hunter" males exhibit a green/yellow body, horizontal black line, irredescent blue dorsal fin, orange splotch behind the gill plate, and red on the unpaired fins. Females are silver/gray.

About the only time that you can tell the sexes apart is when they are ready to breed. The male will have what is known as tubercles that appear on the gill-plate and on the leading rays of the pectoral fins.

pharyngeal teeth (throat teeth) - Tooth-like structures in the back part of the throat derived from gill supports. Primarily used for grinding, may be used to produce sound.

Symptoms of oxygen deficiency sometimes occur in heavily stocked aquariums and are demonstrated by fish exhibiting exaggerated and rapid gill movement. It is important to note that temperature is also a factor.

A short-bodied fish with no dorsal fin and short tail fins. A berry-like growth covers the head and face. Aerate the water as gill activity may be impaired.

This prevents the water from escaping while a "plunger" type of apparatus -a mechanism driven by a highly modified gill arch called a branchiostegal ray-mounted at the base of the throat forces the water upward where it shoots down the fish's ...

In most cases, diagnosis of a fish ailment can be made only with microscopic examination of body scrapings or gill biopsies.

They discovered that gill damage could occur and was often permanent. This led many aquarists to believe that putting starter fish into a toxic environment was cruel.
