Overview: The unusual appearance and novelty of the Elephant Nose has increased its popularity in recent years.

Gnathonemus petersii can be a playful fish. With its surprisingly flexible long nose, it will dig and feel around in search of food. It generally ignores prepared dry foods, hence live foods must be available to the owner.

Gnathonemus petersii
SYN : Mormyruspetersii, Gnathonemus pictus
PD : This species has an elongated, laterally compressed body. The Elephant Nose has a small round mouth that is located above its trunk-like extension or proboscis.

A good example of this is the elephantnose fish, Gnathonemus petersii. When you search the literature you will find out that this species will reach a final length of 35 cm and should be housed in a tank with a length of approximately 80 cm.

Second, the most common species (Gnathonemus petersii) are territorial and can be quite aggressive. While they cannot cause substantial injuries in their tank mates (their mouths are very small), they may harass them to death.
