Gold Gourami
The Gold Gourami is a color variation of the Blue Gourami that is a deep orange with lighter orange shading. The Gold Gourami also has rust colored markings and is lacking the "spots" of the Blue Gourami.

Gold Gouramies are very hardy and pretty fish which are often sold to and chosen by beginners because of their hardiness, but they do have two points against this choice: first, they grow rather large (~15 cm) and may overcrowd smaller tanks.

The Gold Gourami, like the Blue Gourami, Platinum Gourami, and Opaline Gourami, is a color morph of the Three-spot Gourami and is therefore very similar. The difference in the Gold Gourami is the lack of the three spots and the gold coloration.

The gold Gourami originated in 1970 in East Germany when some aquarists put their Cosby gouramis in outdoor pools in a warm summer. As these fish spawned and grew, their blue pigment disappeared and they grew up gold.

Gold Gouramis are considered labyrinth fish, meaning that although they are equipped with gills, they also have a special organ which allows them to also breathe directly from the air.

The Gold Gourami is very common to the aquarium hobby. You'll find it in just about every store that carries Gouramis. The body is gold or yellow in color.

Two Gold Gouramis Left to right - a female and a male gold gourami in my plant tank. A torquise rainbow fish is out-of-focus in the back. This photo was taken in mid-1992.

They live happily in my 90 gallon tank with 3 balas, 3 clown loaches, 3 albino cories, 2 gold gouramis, 1 pink gourami (kissing fish), 4 Australian rainbows, 1 pleco, and a blue lobster. They all get along well.

The gold gourami is simply a highly bred strain of Trichogaster trichopterus as is the opaline gourami. Wild T. trichopterus are tan fish sometimes seen as the 3 spot gouramis. What about a cross between a gold gourami and an opaline gourami?

I have been feeding this stuff to my fish for about a month now, and the results have been better than when I had fed my fish a Wardley flake food - the colours of my Gold Gouramis have been brighter and my Jewel Cichlids have displayed a bright red ...

Somewhat more striking would be 35 Blues and 15 Opalines, and better yet might be 35 Blues and 15 Gold Gouramis. All these mixes keep the body shape theme, which maintains some of the blocking effect even while the fishes interact.

There are several colour variants available, giving this species several common names such as Opaline gourami, gold gourami, Cosby gourami, marbled gourami, and three-spot gourami.
