Any usefulness out of halogen lights?

Halogen Lights: Lights that have a very yellow light not appropriate for aquarium use. Do not confuse these with metal halide lights.
Hap: Short for Haplochromine. See Haplochromine.

Halogen lamps
The tungsten filament of incandescent bulbs is here replaced by another metal, which prevents them from turning black. These lamps can be equipped with a rheostat, but they are generally little used by hobbyists.
Discharge lamps ...

Halogen Lights: Lights with a very yellow color spectrum. Due to their color, these lights are not recommended for use in a reef aquarium.

halogen
Halogen lights are a type of incandescent light with a color spectrum range in the low red-yellows, bad for your aquarium because they will encourage massive algae growth, and also because they tend to run hot.

Halogen Lights - A type of light that emits a yellow coloured spectrum. Click here to read our lighting guide.
Heater - A device used to heat the water in an aquarium to the appropriate temp. Click here to read our heating guide.

Another halogen like Bromine, Iodine is generally not considered a heavy metal contaminant. All salts except Omega Sea tested below the 0.5 ppm test detection limit.
Potassium (ppm) ...

Iodine is a halogen, and is required for vertebrates in its ionic form. Iodine is the element; iodide is the ionic form. Do not confuse either of those with "tincture of iodine" which is a topical antiseptic and quite toxic.

``Can I use those cheap Halogen bulbs from the hardware store?''
Do not confuse MH with the tungsten halogen lights sold in hardware stores as utility floods or living room fixtures; Halogen lights are basically high-wattage incandescent lights, ...

The tall light accepts an 800 Watt halogen lamp while the floor unit a 500 Watt one.

The column immediately adjacent to the far-right family of noble gases, is termed the halogens (note the similarity of halo above and halogen here).

Iodine is required for vertebrates (Iodine is a halogen). "Iodine is necessary for metabolism as an essential part of thyroid hormone, which is our metabolic pacemaker" -quote from a doctor friend.

5s with highlight plants and CO2, to Coralife 18W units, to a 25W quartz-halogen desk lamp, to a 10W Home Depot unit in a home-made cabinet...to no artificial (other than ambient) room light on a twelve-ounce-sized tank (with riccia and Java fern).

Chlorine (Cl) or Free Chlorine is a halogen chemical element.
In its free form when added to water, it's in fact more correctly called dichlorine or Cl2.

I have had good success with both compact fluorescent bulbs and par 20, 50-watt halogen bulbs. Don't be afraid to try different light sources. Plants will recover very nicely even if they look rough.

Mercury Vapor, Halogen, HPS, etc. - avoid, wrong spectral output.
3.2 Detail Discussion ...

If they get too tall, try brighter lighting, as plants tend to grow as if they were stretching for light. Halides and high-kelvin halogen lights will suppress the plant and force it to grow fuller and not upward.

The type and output of the lighting will also affect the type of algae and growth rates. Nearly any type of intense light can be used, metal halide, VHO and HO flourescents, mercury vapor, halogen to name a few.
