Haplochromine: Both a genus of Cichlids as well as an informal group of Cichlids that are generically (although not precisely) described as a non-Mbuna flock because many of these fish once belonged to the broad genus Haplochromis Hilgendorf.
Haplochromine (Haplochromis) - Any cichlid from the African Rift Lakes and certain other regions currently or formerly belonging to the Haplochromis genus (often abbreviated to Hap).

Macrophthalmus is easily at a disadvantage in a Malawi community tank; they do not attack food with the gusto of the mbuna and more robust haplochromines, such as Nimbochromis. Fortunately, we found a food the fish relished in frozen bloodworms.
"Mbuna", a word meaning "rock fish," is used to describe a group of Haplochromines that are found on the rocky biotope along the shores of Lake Malawi. Ten genera belong to this group.

With Haplochromine populations decimated, the fishermen are forced to purchase the Perch scraps from the large fisheries that have the technology and boats to fish from the open waters of the lake.
For this reason we don't include haplochromine fish like those in the genus Pseudocrenilabris (Dwarf Egytian Mouthbrooder types) and smaller members of the genus Archocentrus (Central American Convict types).
The taiwan reef is a haplochromines from lake malawai. Fairly easy to keep they can be sensitive to poor water conditions. A clumsy fish they need larger tanks with rounded rocks.
May eat smaller fish. Best kept with other large fishes which can hold their own but are not overly aggressive. The open-water 'Haplochromines' from Lake Malawi are a good choice.

The fish is popular in the aquarium hobby due to the bright rainbow-like colors of adult males and its relatively peaceful temperament. Juvenile and female P. taeniolatus, like many Haplochromines, do not display bright colouration.
Health ...
Cichlids from Lakes Malawi and Victoria, on the other hand, do not appear to have this genetic wariness, and have proven much easier to work with in spawning S. multipunctatus in the aquarium. Victorian Haplochromines are best suited to this purpose.
