Heater Placement. Water current ditributes heat, so place the heater near an outside power filter, water pump, or aerating device.

In line heaters require a pump to pump the water through them, though this can usually be piggy backed with a trickle filter or UV sterilizer, and all the heater requires is water flow.

This heater is great for small tanks. It is small enough to fit in even those tiny Azoo Palm Filters (which I also recommend). Easliy hidden by plants or it can actually be buried in the gravel. Suction cups keep it securely in place.

When adding a heater to your aquarium let the heater sit in the water for a minimum of ½ an hour before plugging it in.
The Red Hump Eartheater has an interesting nomenclatural history as evidenced by the varied names the species has been sold under within the hobby.

Purchasing a heater is, in this author's opinion, quite a bit more simple than purchasing a filter. The important thing when purchasing a heater is that you want to be sure you get the proper size.
Heater: A device to warm the aquarium water. They are available as submersible heaters, over-the-side heaters, and under tank coils.
Heater- if you plan on keeping tropical fish you will need one of these. The wattage depends on the size of the tank and the temperature of the room you are keeping it in. If you space consider having 2 smaller heaters rather than one larger one.

Strip heaters are used to locally heat up plastic to create nice bends. You can purchase strip heaters from various suppliers or you can make your own. Hopefully I will publish an article on making strip heaters in the near future.
Filter Heater
The filter heater is a really nice option to consider to maintain an even temperature in your aquarium. It heats the water as it moves the water through a filter, so basically accomplishes a couple of things at once.
Heaters (especially cheap ones) will fail. Most often the contact that actually turns the heater on and off gets permanently stuck, either in the on or off position.
Heaters. Ok, I am sure everybody thought of that. This is the best solution because a) it heats the water gradually, b) the heat is distributed evenly if the heaters are correctly positioned and c) they can keep the water temperature constant.
Heater output is measured in watts. The rule of thumb for selecting the correct size heater is 3 - 5 watts per gallon. There are two main factors in deciding whether to go to the low or high end of the guideline.

Both submersible and hang-on heaters are available. All are thermostatically controlled, and many can be set for specific temperatures. Hang-on models are less expensive, since submersibles must obviously be water-tight.

Heater-bi-metallic strip
Bi-Metallic thermostats operate with a strip of two different fused metals that expand an contract differently. This will make the strip move one way as it cools and the opposite way when it warms.
Many people use an undergravel heater to help the nutrients dissolve into the gravel, I have not yet found a need for one of these. For this set up you will require adequate lighting.

Since most puffers are tropical fish, you'll need a heater. I recommend a submersible heater of adequate size for your tank. Check the packaging or ask your local fish dude (or girl) at the LFS.
Avoiding the classic combined heater/stats is a really good idea for these fish as they are infamous for jamming themselves against the glass and the heater element.
