Hierarchy

Aquarium Heterotis NiloticusHighland Swordtail

Hierarchy in the African cichlid community African cichlids, even within the limits of a tank, form a hierarchy. After keeping Africans for a while you will see this taking shape. This is true both interspecies and intraspecies.

The hierarchy of scientific classification
In biological classification, family (Latin: familia, plural familiae) is a rank, or a taxon in that rank. Exact details of formal nomenclature depend on the Nomenclature Code which applies.

Conflict may erupt if they are of the same species and a hierarchy is under development Different species may need to established a sense of their own territories.

This species develops a hierarchy when in a group, and one puffer (usually a male) will become the dominant one.
[edit] Diet
Like some puffers, dwarf puffers are snail eaters.

Males are territorial and a hierarchy will be formed within a group; all fish in the group should be acquired at the same time to avoid territorial aggression (subordinate fish can be bullied to death) when new fish are added to an existing group.

Males may engage in mock battles to establish a hierarchy among the group when first introduced to a tank. They do little to no damage to each other and this behavior quickly subsides once the hierarchy is established.

The day after they were introduced, the hierarchy was already made. The biggest tropheus, then the smaller one, then the biggest labs, then at last, the smaller one.

Like many other schooling fish, the Spotted Cardinalfish will form a strict hierarchy when kept in small groups within the aquarium.

Peaceful; These cardinalfish will not bother most tankmates or each other. Though they maintain a social hierarchy, they are not aggressive towards each other like the Banggai cardinalfish.

When buying Red-belly Piranhas, select a shoal of small, young specimens and allow them to grow up together, forming their own hierarchy within the shoal.

Meaning that the fry do not have a pre-determined sex, and develop into males and females depending on the hierarchy of the school. A pair will lay eggs along the base of the host anemone, using it to protect the eggs.

They may seem aggressive with members of their own species and other loaches, but this is usually the means of establishing a hierarchy. They are peaceful but they can hold their own with mildly aggressive tank mates.

males" only occur in situations where some males are unable to establish territories of their own and will become territorial males themselves, with the accompanying impressive colors and finnage, if a space opens up in the region's hierarchy.

Although not a schooling fish they benefit by being kept with a large number of their own kind. Among the males there is a distinct hierarchy. Temperature range from seventy-two to eighty-two degrees. A very peaceful and hardy species.

You also get to watch mating behaviors and courting. If you want a very dynamic tank, but in the freshwater realm, a tank with breeding fish or a tank with a definite hierarchy (example: African cichlids) can be quite interesting.

Even then there will be lots of fighting and jostling within the school until the social hierarchy is determined, and you may lose some fish in the process. What is worse, the jockeying within the harem never ceases with these fish.

Kind of self-placement in the arbitrary hierarchy of the aquatic world. Just a couple ephemeral wisps of though. Richard Hostler Product Information Editor PC Connection (603) 423-2234
Low tech/high tech ...

We will not do this but rather stick to our simple directory hierarchy with Salt and Fresh being subdirectories of Fish. (No need to make this more complicated that it already is. Or any longer:) ) ftp> cd ..
