Hydrocotyle verticillata (family Apiaceae) is a very ornamental plant because of its unusual shaped leaves. The stem of the plant creeps along the substrate withits leaves straight up.
There are two species of pennywort grown in aquaria, Hydrocotyle leucocephala and Hydrocotyle verticillata. The first species has a horizontal stem that doesn't ascend to the surface.

Add slower growing plants like Hydrocotyle verticillata and Anubias once the fast-growing plants are established. Test your nitrate levels monthly (or sooner after adding fish) to ensure that nitrate levels are not rising too high (ie > 10 mg/l).
