Three months ago I began a new project to test old hydrometers. The purpose of the test was to compare several old, very used, hydrometers with other "more accurate" devices.

Hydrometer
We have already discussed this, but it must be stressed that it is a vital instrument for monitoring the density of sea water, i.e. the salt content.
Equipment for analyzing water ...

Hydrometer - A device for measuring the specific gravity of a marine tank.
Killifish - A family of freshwater fish that have a life span of only one year.

Hydrometer - A device for measuring the specific gravity of a marine tank. Invertebrate - Creatures without a backbone.
Killifish - A family of African freshwater fish that only have a life span of one year.

Hydrometer: A Hydrometer is an instrument used to determine the specific gravity of a fluid, or the salinity of water.

Hydrometer A device used to measure salinity of water.
Hydrophilous pollination The transference of pollen from the Anthers of the Stamens to the Stigmas on the surface of the water or under water.

hydrometer - A device used to measure salinity of water.
ich - A very common parasitic disease characterized by white salt-like specks all over the fish.

Hydrometer: An instrument used to determine the specific gravity of a fluid. Hobbyist grade hydrometers are temperature corrected to read the specific gravity at around 77°F (25°C) because specific gravity is temperature dependent.

Hydrometer
A device used to measure the gravity of seawater. The most common types consist of a clear chamber with a floating needle.

hydrometer
Inexpensive device that measures the density of water. Used by aquarists to determine salinity, but lacks the accuracy of a refractometer.

Hydrometer Device for measuring the specific gravity (S.G.) of salt water, especially useful when making up synthetic mixes. May be either a free-floating or swing-needle type.

Hydrometers, like this one from Aquarium Systems Inc, measure specific gravity. This has a direct correlation to the salt and mineral weight of water. It is an obviously important tool for the marine aquarist.

Hydrometer - A device used to measure the salinity of aquarium water.

Iodine - A trace element found in seawater which is needed in small quantities for reef invertebrates especially corals.

Chillers with electronic sensors take care of the temperature (quite effectively I must say), a pH monitor gives me the correct measurements and - till recently - the use of a glass hydrometer was supposed to give me the specific gravity of the ...

To tell you how much salt is in the water you want a hydrometer. That is a vital but inexpensive item of equipment to keep a marine tank, and it should invariably be used when producing up water for a water change.

mix my salt in a spare tank/waterdrum as when first mixed the salt is very caustic, if you are just starting out and the tank is TOTALLY EMPTY then yes you may mix the salt you need in the tank, get the temp of the water to 26c ( or the hydrometer ...

Saltwater Hydrometer or even better a refractometer
Aquarium filter (not absolutely necessary if running with adequate amounts of live rock, but nice to have if you need to use a mechanical filter or activated carbon, etc.) ...

A hydrometer will be needed for mixing the salt with the water to the appropriate salinity. This is a device that measures the specific gravity (spg) of the water, thereby indicating how much salt is dissolved in the water.

To measure this value for your aquarium water you require an instrument called a hydrometer.

Purchase a hydrometer and test the specific gravity every week. test for ammonia and nitrate, these results will let you know how well your filter is functioning.

Less precise but still useful measurements can be made with a hydrometer, which actually measures specific gravity, or density. Pure water weighs precisely 1000. grams per liter, for a specific gravity of 1.000.

Most hydrometers (hydrometers measure specific gravity) are calibrated to read the correct specific gravity at 59F.

but since most of our hydrometers are not very accurate, target 1.010 - it's a lot safer.
Once it's reached 1.010 keep the fish there for about 2 weeks.

Seatesttm hydrometer - measures how much salt is dissolved in your water. Unlike the old "bobber" style, these hydrometers are easy to read and hard to break.
Crushed Coral gravel - helps maintain a stable pH and covers the aquarium bottom.

Note that virtually all hydrometers are calibrated for measurements at a temperature of 60 F. Included below is a short table of temperature adjustments. Add the value shown to your hydrometer reading to get an accurate reading.

Specially formulated salt must be added to the marine aquarium water. For salt we use Coralife or Instant Ocean, but any major brand will work as well. Measured with a hydrometer, specific gravity should be between 1.020 and 1.025.

In the aquarium brackish water is maintained by using marine salt (not aquarium salt which is a tonic salt), and a hydrometer or refractometer to measure salt levels (the specific gravity, or S.G.).
