Incandescent Lighting
Incandescent lights have been used on aquarium applications for many years now. They offer high lumen output, relatively long lives, and low cost.
Incandescent bulbs are the typical lights used in the home for general use. An incandescent light consists of a glass bulb with a filament within it.
Incandescent:
This is the type lighting that you see around your home. Incandescent bulbs are used in lamps, desk lights and spotlights etc., these lamps give a natural pleasing light but are useful for only the smallest of aquariums.

Incandescent lighting is available but does not offer the same aesthetic or efficiency value of fluorescent lighting.
Incandescent lights are available in a variety of colors to accent your aquarium, however there is no particular advantage to one variety over another.
An incandescent strip light - You can use either a full hood like the All Glass Economy Glass Hood (these usually only come in a 10 gallon size) or just the strip light, like this Perfecto Incandescent Strip Light.
To do so I placed two heaters in the tank and then placed a 100 watt incandescent floodlight over the tank.
First and foremost, don't use incandescent lights; they generate far too much heat and not enough light. Full-spectrum fluorescent bulbs are ideal, since they duplicate the spectrum of the sun.
Fluorescent light is better than the standard incandescent light in planted aquarium. Some plant species are very demanding in require even stronger light than the fluorescent, but these species are not recommended for beginners.
(A timer is only usable on lights that are 'quick start' or incandescent). They are inexpensive and a must if you ever spend a day or two, or more, away from home. Be sure to plug only your lights into the timer.
Plants rely on the suns light for photosynthesis and normal incandescent lights are pretty much useless for them no matter how many lumens you provide.
When the pH is low together with a slight temperature like in a natural aquarium set-up using a split incandescent bulb lightening system; the NH3 LEVELS are low and NH4 + high.

Metal Halide Lighting: Metal halide is considered by many to be a best method of lighting reef tanks. They burn much hotter than incandescent, high output (HO) and very high output (VHO) lighting.

Fluorescent lighting will produce much better lighting for viewing your fish than incandescent light bulbs will. Regent / Aqua-Tech from Walmart are actually products from Marineland.
They are very efficient in terms of lumens/watt, although they burn much hotter than incandescent lights (HO and VHO). Do not confuse them with halogen bulbs, which have a very yellow light not appropriate for aquarium use.
