Buyer's guide to internal filters ...

Internal filters come in many different styles, and are simply placed in the aquarium either on the substrate, or mounted to one of the sides with suction cups. They include corner box filters and sponge models.

INTERNAL FILTERS
Not as common a filter but a much less alternative to expensive and bulky canister filters. Internal filters are basically a power head with a filter of varying capacity attached.

Internal filter systems, such as the Fluval "Plus" underwater units, offer the following application possibilities: Vertical or horizontal filter placement. Can be used to create waterfalls in turtle and reptile tanks.

There is a type of Internal Filter that functions the same as HOB filters, but sits within the tank rather than on the outside.

I already used small internal filters (both earlier Fluval models and several different Eheim models) in several of my tanks for current (especially the RFUG filtered tanks), so I adopted these in my canister-filtered tanks as well.

BUBBLE UP FILTERS These are specific examples of internal filters. These use streams of air bubbles to push water up and out of a tube, thereby creating a pull of water into the filter through the filter media. (See INTERNAL FILTERS).

Breeding:Can be done in a 60 cm breeding tank with an internal filter. Lots of plants and/or driftwood, and clean soft to medium hard water. The fish will spawn at the bottom of the tank.

Installed a 180 Liter per hour Tetra internal filter ( one of these green cartridges with a powerhead) Result: Without any light increase, the oxygen production seemed doubled.

Internal filters can be placed in here, along with a heater stat. If these are fully covered by the water, they can be plugged in and turned on, keeping the water moving through the filter.

Ideally the tank should have a layer of gravel with some fine plants (not plastic, and no plastic figurines), and ideally there should be no internal filter as this can damage their eye tissue.

I decided to turn down the bubbles in my internal filter until there was almost no surface ripples. Immediately, they started to explore the tank and swimming with my bala shark and barbs. They are great fun to watch. Dan 2005-04-13 ...

As are all his larger tanks, it is triple filtered; with a canister and an internal filter, and also a sponge filter.

The fish favours eating at the intake of the internal filter. Here the fish can easily pick off trapped food; their oddly shaped mouths are perfectly adapted for the task.

(submersible) power filter: An internal (submersible) power filter operates on the same principle as an internal box filter, but utilizes a motor. These filters are more suitable to larger tanks and larger fish loads than air-powered internal filters.
