Jump Start - To accelerate or bypass the initial cycling period of a newly setup tank by adding a filter, filter media, gravel and/or water that has been running on an established tank.

Also, one of the sponges can be removed and transferred to a new tank, bringing with it a colony of beneficial bacteria, and thereby "jump starting" the cycling of a new tank.

This will jump start the bacteria growth and speed up the cycling process. As a side note, do not transfer water over from the old tank.

If you don't have a fish quarantine tank that you keep running all the time (some people keep a tank with a few tough fish for just this purpose), you'll need to jump start the bacterial populations, especially with more sensitive new arrivals.

At the store we backed off of the sale of BioSpira for new tank set ups and jump starting them as it was advertised to be used for, and instead we began using it for those customers who went elsewhere and grossly overstocked their tanks, ...

There are also some bacteria starters available in many pet stores to jump start the tank. There is no reason why a fish should be subjected to toxic water and that "Yes they may end up dead. its called cycling." crap. Shame on you.

Sometimes spare aquariums need to be unexpectedly and quickly set up, and you can not borrow media from another aquarium to jump start the cycle. For these exceptions, empty the filter of any sponges, media, cartridges etc and add zeo-lite.

The nitrogen cycle can be sped up or ``jump started'' in a number of ways. Unfortunately, they require access to an established tank, which a beginning aquarist may not have available.

(Nitrobacter bacteria were previously believed to fill this role, and continue to be found in commercially available products sold as kits to "jump start" the nitrogen cycle in an aquarium.

This algae provides a rich source of live microbes, more of which are found on the prolific plants that I also stock the tank with. If you can provide these rich surfaces for the babies to graze on it will really jump start their growth.
