Preparing Kalkwasser
By Albert Thiel
The more hobbyists you listen to, the more methods you will come across about how to prepare Kalkwasser (Limewater) in the proper manner. This is unfortunate, as it is confusing for beginners especially.

Kalkwasser: A German term that means literally chalk-water, this is water with calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2 dissolved in it, and has a pH of approximately 12.0.

Kalkwasser
This is a German word, that translated means "lime water". Kalkwasser is calcium hydroxide that is usually administered using a dosing system.

Kalkwasser: A term referring to water with dissolved calcium hydroxide. It is used to add inorganic calcium to the water.
Killifish: A very beautiful group of fish which can be quite hard to find.

Kalkwasser: The German word meaning calcium water, kalkwasser is a mixture of calcium hydroxide in water "Ca(HO)2". It is an extremely potent substance and should be used with caution.

Fish/Corals
I got the majority of my corals from making the local fish stores (LFS) rounds here in Houston. If you are persistent you come across some nice stuff.

Kalkwasser
The use of calcium hydroxide (kalkwasser), when introduced by Alf Nielsen in 1990, probably did more to enable us to keep SPS corals than just about any other advancement in reefkeeping to that point. Before this discussion by Mr.

KALKWASSER
1 TBS. MARINE DELUXE*
Chop up all the ingredients in a blender until you have a uniform slurry (not quite watery - you want little pieces the size of brine shrimp or larvae).

b) KW

in the subtopic of handling evaporation under the temperature main topic.
c) Commercial 2-part ionic salts ...

Kalk - Kalk (Kalkwasser) is used to raise Alkalinity in an aquarium.
Kelvin - Scale used to measure the colour of light a tube emits.

However, kalkwasser (calcium hydroxide) is preferred, as adding kalkwasser does not upset the alkalinity or ionic balance the way calcium chloride can. calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2. See kalkwasser.

>Also, does anyone >know if Theil makes a calcium supplement that is NOT kalkwasser? I >cannot seem to find it anywhere! Who cares? OK, now for a serious answer to your question.

Other than the skimmer there are two pieces of equipment which are employed for the purpose of maintaining alkalinity and calcium levels: a calcium reactor and a Kalkwasser mixer.

Calcium hydroxide (CaOH) also called slaked lime, hydrated lime, Kalkwasser (Lime water), Calcium hydrate or pickling lime[2]
Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) also called lye or caustic soda (this is usually found in cleaning[3] ...

Such a system can require almost constant supplementation, as with a calcium reactor or kalkwasser dosing pump.
Regular “salt' is sodium chloride.

Red Algae (Rhodophyta) - The is coralline algae. It is beneficial in a reef tank and thrives when Kalkwasser is used. Coralline algae helps reduce other less desirable forms of algae.

NOTE ; partially in lue of the sand at the bottom of the tank, which helps produce calcium, the Berlin method uses heavy amounts of Kalkwasser ( calcerous water ) for evaporative replacement.
The Algae Scrubber method ...

that no precipitate is put off in regulating calcium this way, they help regulate pH and calcium levels precisely, they can be used in different applications, they are cheaper than peristaltic dosing pumps, and they don't clog like many Kalkwasser ...

calcium carbonate
CaCO3. Calcium in sea water precipitates (becomes a solid) as calcium carbonate, which forms the shells of mollusks and the skeletons of corals and invertebrates. calcium hydroxide
Ca(OH)2. See kalkwasser.
