The Kissing Gourami is also known as the Kisser Fish or Pink Kisser. The Kissing Gourami is silvery-peach in color and has thick lips that can be extended or pursed (as in kissing).

The Kissing Gourami is one of the most popular gouramis. Everyone who gets interested in gouramis eventually gets a Kissing Gourami because of their unusual "kissing" action!

Kissing gouramis need to be kept large aquariums, I would say a 55 gallon minimum. They should be densely planted to mimic their home waters. You can use Java fern and Java moss as well as some floating plants.

Kissing gouramis, also known as kissers (Helostoma temminckii), are large tropical freshwater fish comprising the monotypic gourami family Helostomatidae (from the Greek elos [stud, nail], stoma [mouth]).

The kissing gourami is a peaceful species that should be housed with fish of similar size and temperament. Males will occasionally fight by "pressing" their mouths together - hence the common name.

Kissing Gouramis are best known for their habit of extending their lips and kissing. The action is not a sign of affection, but may be a display of aggression. This "kissing" is mostly used for scraping algae off of rocks.

Kissing Gourami (Helostoma temminckii)
This gourami reaches an adult size of 12 inches and so is unsuitable for most tanks. They are difficult to sex so if you are looking to breed them you would have to buy a group and let them pair off.

Kissing Gourami (Helostoma temmincki): There are two variations of the Kissing Gourami - one is olive-green, and (shown here) is pink. It has the unusual habit of "kissing" members of its own species - randy fish.

Kissing gouramis, who "kiss" not to show affection but to test the strength of another male, are often busy kissing plants, too. They pick algae from plant leaves, but often end up eating the foliage if tender enough to nibble on.

The kissing gourami is purely mass-market fodder. We'd much rather have some bizarre anabantoid found only in a certain ditch by the Ho Chi Minh trail at $200 a pair.

Most Kissing Gouramies seen will be of the Pink variety. Small Gouramies, only growing to 2" or so in length, are also available. These include the Dwarf Gourami - Colisa lalia, the Honey Gourami - C.

Called the Kissing Gourami these fish have an unusual way of testing each others strength. The two males go head to head, trying to win the affections of a female. Only one or two per tank is best.

Unlike other Gouramis the Kissing Gourami will not build a bubble nest. This fish skips this step and simply lets the eggs float on the surface. Soft water may be required to get the female to breed.

A classic recipe for trouble involves the kissing gourami, Helostoma temmincki. These are often purchased in "pairs", which is loosely defined as "the first two fish the fish-store clerk manages to get into a plastic bag".

The Kissing Gourami - Helostoma temmincki grows larger (up to 12") but makes a good fish for beginners with larger tanks.

Origin:Thailand, Indonesia: Java, Sumatra, Borneo(Including Brunei and Sarawak). Here they are mainly found in the swamps, but also in beeks and rivers.

Before taking the catfish home, I was able to observe its behavior, since it was residing in a large tank together with some kissing gouramies, two-spot cats and large rasboras.

When Kissing Gouramis "kiss" you are observing a territorial behavior between two males, which can get so violent that they actually try to rip each other's lips off. We list Bettas here, but caution that they do not make good community tank fish.

It should be brightly lit and have many hiding places among plant roots. The Combtail Gourami should have larger tank mates, as it is often a boisterous fish. Some good choices would be the Kissing Gourami and Cichlids.

If your intention is a well planted aquarium special care should be taken when selecting fish in order to avoid plant eaters (like silver dollar, kissing gourami etc).

Now, in the case of Petco and Petsmart, where they do that, I have found (thanks to several friends who work there) that a certain type of people go to such stores, and when they are looking for something beyond the kissing gourami and livebearer, ...
