Knifefish
General Info: Knifefish make interesting additions to a community tank, or a nice show-fish in a specialty type tank.

 


Knifefish belong to two order S : Gymnotiformes and Osteoglossiforms. Members of these orders are generallylarge with strong lateral compression and elongated bodies.

The Knifefishes sport an unusual, beautiful,... and yes, you guessed it!... a knife type shape! ...

Knifefish have always been a favourite of mine, particularly the larger species. What they lack in colour they more than make up for in beauty and grace.

Most knifefish species come from Southeast Asia, specifically Thailand, Borneo, Malaysia, India, and Sumatra.
These fish usually are found in lakes, swamps, and river backwaters. They prefer still waters and can survive with low oxygen.

African Knifefish have interesting personalities. When first introduced into a new aquarium, they will be rather timid, and will shy away from food and other fish. However, after adjustment, the Knifefish will happy.

As with all Knifefish this species is an electric fish. They use a small electrical current to help them locate food and to help them navigate through their environments. No need to worry however, the current is barely detectable...it won't hurt you.

I have successfully raised a oscar and knifefish together with a tire tread eel and large pleco. They are a happy peaceful family. The trick is to get them young and near in size with the oscar a bit smaller.

hes about 4 inches, has great color, and is making a great tankmate for my clown knifefish. hes also in the tank with a tiger oscar. believe it or not everyone is getting along. i havent tried frozen foods, but he seems to like guppies.

My banded knifefish and all. But it didn't. Currently its livin with them along with a new addition of A threadfin paradise. Its not ugly..It really has a beautiful body with gold bands... Really weird yet attractive.

This behavior shows that the fish can chose when to emit electric shocks and that it is not a involuntary reaction. Unlike knifefishes (which also have electrical capabilities), ...
