Lamprologus ocellatus is a type of shell dweller from Lake Tanganyika. It is a popular aquarium fish due to its small size, appearance, and intelligence.

Origin: Lake tanganjika
Etymology: Ocellatus refers to the spot on the gill cover.

Origin and locale/variety: Off the Tanzania and Zambia coastlines, Lake Tanganyika, East Africa
Size: Adults are usually 1.0 to 1.5 inches in aquarium environment.

Neolamprologus Ocellatus is an active little shell dwelling cichlid from Lake Tanganyika with lots of spirit and character. They are a beautiful shiny gold/tan color with bright shiny purple bellies. Males can reach 2"-2.

Eggs are laid in the shell, and fry can be seen at the mouth of the shell, with the parents close by. When breeding, Lamprologus ocellatus are fearless, and will attack and kill fish much larger than them.

SYN: Julidochromis ocellatus
PD: An elongated fish with a large mouth. The coloration is light brown to brown. A faint white stripe extends from the gill cover back to the caudal peduncle.

It is possible to keep some cichlids, such as Lamprologus ocellatus, in very small aquariums. However, for your first cichlid aquarium I would recommend a larger aquarium of no less than 30 gallons/120 L.
