Orange Leleupi Cichlid
The Orange Neolamprologus Leleupi Cichlid originates from the rocky coastal waters of Southern Lake Tanganyika, Africa. This species is one of the smaller of the cichlids, only attaining a maximum size of 4 inches.

The leleupi disappeared into the rockwork and for many months I would only catch a glimpse of them at feeding time. I did notice that they never lost the brilliant yellow colour that they had in the store.

Background:
This species was first discovered (and named) after an entomologist called leleup working at the IRSAC station in Uvira, Zaire in 1958.

My Cichlids Have now been in the tank for a year, and appear to have settled in fine. There is no serious aggression and even the leleupi are tolerant of each other.

This variety of leleupi is a German line-bred stock, selected for intense orange to orange-red color and little to no black markings on the lips.

PD: An elongated cichlid with a characteristic bright yellow color and a set of large lips. The caudal fin is fan-shaped. The lips are a dark yellow, and above the upper lip is a fine green line.

The species currently assigned temporarily to Lamprologus include: brevis, callipterus, calliurus, caudopunctatus, finalimas, leloupi (not leleupi!), multifasciatus, ocellatus, ornatipinnis, similis, speciosus, stappersi (meleagris) and wauthioni.

They cannot hold their own and will often be picked on by larger more robust Lamprologines in a Tanganyikan Community set up. Large robust fish like N. brichardi, N. leleupi, and larger Altolamprologus species will bully these little guys.
