Live Rock
Many saltwater novices look twice when they see a sign for "Live Rock" - and then look a third time when they see how much it costs! Live rock has become the heart of many marine systems, including both reef and fish-only setups.

LIVE ROCKS
These are pieces of rock or fragments of dead coral (madreporites), that are bound together by calcareous rocks or various pieces of debris from invertebrates. They are sometimes removed from their natural setting and sold commercially.

Unlike the corals which were collected in the middle to end of the day, live rock was collected first thing in the morning. After watching this process it was easy to understand why.

Curing live rock is pretty smelly. Therefore, I would recommend doing it somewhere where this will not be a problem. The garage might be a good place as long as it is not too cold.

Live Rock: A term used to associate the many strains of bacteria on rock which has been removed from part of a tropical reef. Live rock is essential for reef aquaria as it initiates and maintains the nitrogen cycle.
