Aquarium LivebearerLive-Bearers

LIVEBEARERS
Livebearers belong to the massive order, Cyprindontiformes and are made up of, among others, the families Anablepidae, Goodeidae, Hemirhamphidae, and Poeciliidae.

Livebearers is the common term for a very popular group of aquarium fish that give birth to live free-swimming young rather than laying eggs.

Livebearers prefer to be kept in groups of at least 6 with at least 2 females to each male. This will prevent too much fighting amongst the males and will stop the females from being constantly harassed by the males.

A: Livebearers are voracious eaters and sometimes their stomachs bulge after a full meal. Pregnant livebearers bulge in the stomach area, and it doesn't subside after feeding time -- it just keeps growing.

Endler's livebearers give birth to live young approximately every 28 days. They are hardy and undemanding in the aquarium though they prefer hard, warm water.

Livebearers
The term livebearer is widely used but it is a very general term and is not biologically specific for any particular group of fishes.

Livebearers breed continuously, often monthly. Females will show a bulging stomach and a dark gravid spot near the anal fin. Females will not eat their newborn, but others will.

Livebearers: Fish that produce live young rather than laying eggs. Freshwater livebearers include guppies, mollies, platys, and swordtails.
Live Fish: fish that are captured and sold to the consumer alive.

Livebearers
These do not lay eggs; instead, the latter develop and hatch in the female's abdomen. The fry are therefore born alive and completely formed, and they immediately start to search actively for their own food.

Endlers Livebearer
This livebearer species might be extinct in the wild. They have very similar care requirements as the guppy and the two are closely related.

Livebearers
Mollies, guppies, platies and other Poecilia or Xiphophorus are also algae eating fish, but not the best in my experience.

[edit] Livebearers
Not all livebearers can hybridise, a Guppy and a Platy for example, cannot cross. These, however, can:

Keeping livebearers - is not difficult. Most are fairly hardy if kept in well-filtered, heated aquariums.

Livebearers include the popular mollies, platies, swordtails, and guppies. Other livebearers are halfbeaks, anableps, and fish in the Goodeid family.

Livebearers are any omnivorous fish that retain eggs inside the body and give birth to live young.

Livebearers, up to 50 young are produced. Keep 2 or more females per male.

These fish are Livebearers. The young will be born free swimming. You can expect a brood of around 100 or less. Separate the babies or remove the adults after breeding has occurred. Swordtails are notorious for eating their own young.

Breeding: Pike Livebearers give birth to up to around 100 fry, with 322 being the highest ever recorded, that are up to an inch long every 4-6 weeks. The fry can be fed brine shrimp, daphnia, and baby fish.

For one thing, many livebearers need high level of salt in their water to be healthy - making them incompatible with many other aquarium fish.

Throughout the world there are concerned aquarists in the ranks of specialty organizations involved with livebearers, killifishes, cichlids, rainbowfishes, etc.

The particular fist one tropical fish breeding will be livebearers that give beginning recommended to their youthful into their processing approach, like guppies in addition to mollies.

On the other hand, more than 500 species of fish are viviparous (livebearers) practising internal fertilisation and producing fully formed young, which are immediately able to swim and feed.

Platies, like most other livebearers, are members of the Poeciliidae family and are found in Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala. These hardy and colorful fish make a wonderful addition to the passive community aquarium.

Classic Q&A: Dying Livebearers
I am 13 years old and have kept fish for over two years now. I have a 75-gallon tank and a 10-gallon tank. The 75-gallon is a community tank, and the 10-gallon houses about 18 fry.

Most mollies grow slightly larger than other livebearers, so it is best to provide these fish with an aquarium of at least 30 gallons, with plenty of hiding spaces.

Select a hardy species and make sure to incorporate some algae controlling species, such as Pencil Fish, Livebearers, Ancistrus, Otocynclus or Sailfin Plecostomus.

Guppies are prolific livebearers - females produce young every 4 weeks. Keep breeding males and females in a small tank. Females become swollen with young (fry) that are born live and swimming.

Other Info= Like most livebearers, Guppies do well with freshwater aquarium salt in the tank, put in as the directions follow.
Breeding Info= TANK: With .75-2.5G (3-10L) capacity and breeding trap for 1 female.

It is well suited to be kept combined with african cichlids, and livebearers, although smaller fish are often eaten. Synodontis petricola can be kept single, although it's better to keep the fish in small groups of 3-4 animals.

When people talk about common livebearers, the guppy is usually the first fish mentioned. Granted the pet store guppy is normally quite common, but guppies that win consistently at fish shows are not.

He also said that it is safe, as soon as the eggs have hatched in his mouth, to move the male into one of those breeding boxes that are used for livebearers. This usually happens around the 7th day after spawning.

Care: Can be kept in normal community tanks, although they should not be kept together with other livebearers, since the fish will cross and I quote Baensch and Riehl, another true species will become extinct ...

Livebearers (guppies, platies, and swordtails) are notoriously effective tank breeders. Keep in mind that breeding does include its own challenges such as keeping the fry (baby fish) from getting eaten and successfully feeding the fry.

Mollies are very versatile fish having the unique ability to live in both freshwater and saltwater if acclimated slowly. Just like other livebearers, mollies are easy to breed, and make fascinating fish for the seasoned aquarist.

Some fish that do much better with added salt would include Goldfish, Koi, African Cichlids, and livebearers. Indeed, the secret to keeping healthy, robust Mollys, Platys, Swordtails, and Guppys is to add salt.

If a male and female guppy are housed together, it is very likely they will spawn. Guppies are livebearers, not egg-layers like most fish, and will produce up to 30 fry at a time.

Gold Wag Swordtails are livebearers, and when breeding, they will produce up to 80 fry. Females should be separated before giving birth. Once born, the fry should be separated from the mother, as Gold Wags will eat them.

The later is usually not a successful because most people do not have another aquarium sitting around which is cycled and empty of predators, so I'd recommend keeping them in the same tank. If they are not hidden though, especially with livebearers, ...
