Pond Fish will add drama and brilliance to your backyard haven, with their wonderful personalities and intriguing patterns and colors.

Loaches for larger tanks would be: Chromobotia macracanthus (Clown Loach), Yasuhikotakia modesta (Blue Botia) and Yasuhikotakia morleti (Skunk Loach).

Kuhli Loaches normally reach lengths around three and a half inches (nine centimeters). Their bodies are elongate, and they appear more like the bodies of eels in shape. The body of a Kuhli Loach becomes laterally flattened as it approaches the tail.

Clown loaches are very popular aquarium fish; however they are not always easy to keep successfully since they easily succumb to ick and are sensitive to poor water conditions.

Kuhli Loaches are loners that are most active at night with the lights out. The tank should be decorated with thick bunches of plants and various rocky caves. Light levels should be low, which can be achieved through the use of floating plants.

The clown loach is an active schooling fish that is best kept in small groups of three to six fish. It will tolerate tankmates of other species, although docile species may become agitated by the constant activity of this fish.

Botia macracantha "Clown Loach"
Origin and locale/variety: Undu Reef--Tanzania, Lake Malawi, East Africa
Size: Adults are usually 3.0 to 5.0 inches in aquarium environment.

Clown Loach
Clown Loaches are suitable for freshwater aquariums 20 gallons and up. They can get quite large but they grow very slow, so they can be put in a small aquarium as long as they are eventually upgraded to a larger tank.

Clown Loach (Botia macracantha): A very popular fish, an attractive one. It has some distinctive black stripes across the body, always with one through the forehead and eyes.

Khuli Loach - A relative of the Clown Loach but smaller and more elongated, almost snake-like. Grows to about 12.7cm (5") long and burrows in the substrate.

Loaches will often be happier if kept with a few of their own species.
Weather Loaches - Misgurnus fossilis and Spotted Weather Loaches - Cobitis taenia should be avoided.

Loaches are well known for their "bottom-feeder" behavior and this one lives up to that reputation. Normally quite passive this species can be territorial.

Some loaches are sensitive to poor nitrogen cycle management, which is why they are included here, rather than in the Good First Fish section.

Most Botia and Loach species are not hardy enough to start a new aquarium. Botias are scaleless fish, and are therefore more sensitive to ammonia. The most popular Botia, the Clown Loach, is definitely not a good starter fish, nor is the Kuhli Loach.

Considering that many freshwater fish prefer to be in schools of at least six fish, the price of adding fish to your tank can really add up. We kept this list to fish that would reach an adult size of 2-3 inches.

Examples are tetras, corys, angels, clown loaches, white clouds, barbs. Some kinds of fish do well in trios - 1 male, two females, so they don't harass the females to death. Examples are gouramis, bettas, guppies, platies, mollies.

Some "Skunk Botia" (Botia morleti) are injected with dyes and painted to produce purple, red, and blue loaches.
Another botia, Botia lecontei, is also sold as a blue loach or blue botia, and is not dyed - though a painted blue botia is now available.

The clown loach is the number one choice for eating snails. It is a scavenger by nature but has a sweet tooth for snails. They can be purchased small (usually about an inch or two) and will eat any snail it can fit into it's mouth.

For ridding your tank of snails, you have little recourse other than vacuuming as many up as possible, though clown loaches are rumored to eat snails. The SNAIL SECTION of the DISEASE FAQ describes individual species of snails and specific remedies.

Raise the tank temperature to around 86 degrees provided that you have no cold-water species like weather loaches, goldfish, minnows etc.

Laboratory studies proved that it is safe for even the most delicate fish species, including tetras, discus fry and scaleless fish, like clown loaches. It can be used with all marine fish, invertebrates, such as live corals and anemones.

Fish such as Discus and Bottom dwellers (Catfish, Loaches, Sharks, Plecostomus) require approximately 5 minutes to properly nourish themselves.

Barbel: Whisker-like projections most often found around the mouth of certain fish like catfish and loaches. They are a sensory organ and are used for finding food and for communication.

Aquarists are sometimes advised not to let quick and lively fish (like Barbs) cohabit with slower and more placid species (like loaches), as the latter may be frustrated in their attempts to eat the food provided by their owner.

Best known examples are the sucking loach or Chinese algae, eater-gyrinocheilus aymonieri and the plecostomus and hypostomus. But unfortunately they are rare to come by in pet shops in the country.

My Tiretrack has lived with firemouths, Oscars, clown loaches, my clown knife fish and various catfish with very few aggression problems at all. Tiretracks are beautiful fish and well worth the hours spent digging worms in the garden.

clear bottomed and has no substrate, but in the planted tank I don't see it at all. They will even feed on insects and other smaller snails and their eggs, so all in all I think every tank should have at least one, not to be mixed with clown loaches ...

They also almost always have some of the rarer rainbowfish in stock as well as zebra loaches (personal favorite). It is truly a gem of a fish store for any true enthusiast. If you're ever in the area I recommend that you check them out." ...

It will appear that the tetras brought the ich to the new tank, but they can actually be reacting to small levels that were already present. Ich frequently affects tetras and clown loaches. It can also affect many other fish, including exotic plecos.
