Ludwigia repens is popular, beautiful and easy to grow stem plant that will thrive in most aquariums with the basics. The plant typically grows to a height of 12 to 20 inches. The width of each stem is about 2 to 3 inches, based on leaf growth.

The red shades that show on Ludwigia repens are beautiful in contrast to the usual greens. I received two of these plants roughly 4 months ago, and since then I have had to trim them numerous times.

Ludwigia repens (family Scrophulariaceae) is a fast growing plant with shiny, dark green on top of its leaves and red to pink under surface. This species is fairly easy to grow if it is given enough light and nutrients like all fast growing plants.

I also found some Ludwigia repens >and, believe it or not, a medium sized Echinodorus >(looked like a blehri) growing by the waters edge. I >was pretty surprised about the latter.

Also at the six week mark I made my first changes to the aquascape, removing the ludwigia repens and replacing it with some java fern and anubias nana var. "petite", both tied down to a stump of driftwood placed where the ludwigia had been.

The tank was already heavily planted with Vallisneria spiralis, Cryptocoryne affinis, Ludwigia repens, Echinodorus bleheri, and Pistia stratiotes. But the tank had no other filtration besides the Fluval 303.

For tank set-up, start out with many species of fast-growing plants (you want to find the ones that adapt best to your tank's conditions). Examples: Hygrophila corymbosa, Shinnersia riv., Rotala rotundifolia, Ludwigia repens, Limnophila sessiliflora, ...

Ludwigia repens Spade-shaped leaves, dark green to brownish colored. Stiff stems, up to 20" (50cm) long. For me, transplant stems sometimes rot. Mayaca fluviatilis Very pretty plant. Light green, narrow leaves about 1/2" long, arranged in whorls.
