mbunas - Common name for rock dwelling African Cichlids from lake Malawi.

The refugium is made up of live rock, soft corals, and macro-algae. This tank has an "old school" sump in the rear where I also keep a "cheato chamber" running on a reverse photo period. I have since added in a 40 gallon frag propagation tank.

Very good at eating micro-algae and some macro-algae. Bolder than the Red Hermit, as it will be active during the day. Grows to one inch. Spends almost all of its time on the rocks.

when you trim the macro-algae in the refugium), copepods will enter the water stream and makes their way back into the main tank, providing a regular source of sustenance for the larger organisms.

As with all Leather corals keep macro-algae and Zoanthids away from Leather corals. The intereaction is detrimental to the soft coral in all cases I have observed. This is especially so for all forms of Caulerpa macro-algae.

The rock I got also had substantial populations of non-Caulerpa macro-algaes. I also got a couple of urchins and brittle stars too (along with bristle worms and a mantis shrimp or two that I flushed).

Now 2 months later the tank looks practically the same, the only difference is in the algae covered rock in the foreground now has a sprouting of some kind of Macro-algae, it looks like a deers antler.
