Cichlids from Lake Malawi are generally divided into two big categories; mbuna (meaning "rock fish") and non-mbuna which are called haplochromines (or "haps" for short).

Lake Malawi was formed 1-2 million years ago. This geologically young, rocky lake of the East African Rift is about 375 miles (604 km) long and 53 miles (85 km) wide, making it the ninth largest lake in the world.

General
Altolamps make great candidates for the Tanganyikan community aquarium. They do not harass fish much, and are not overly aggressive but will not allow fish to bully them either.
The Lake Malawi cichlids can quite clearly be seen from above.

Care: Like all Malawi cichlids they should be kept in hard water, over 10 DH (max 20) and alkaline pH. Frequent waterchanges with pre-treated water and large, well filtered tanks.
Like most Lake Malawi cichlids, Nimbochromis polystigma is a mouthbrooder, with the female carrying her young in her mouth for two to three weeks before being released.

The Golden Cichlid is smaller than some other Lake Malawi cichlids, such as the Electric Blue. Mature Golden Cichlids generally measure between nine and ten centimeters (three and a half to four inches) in length, though imperial sizes have been seen.

The most common African Cichlid aquariums consist of either Lake Tanganyika or Lake Malawi cichlids. It is suggested not to mix these two groups together due to character and dietary differences.
Sciaenochromis ahli does well with other Lake Malawi cichlids when provided with a spacious aquarium of 70 gallons or more with ample rockwork.
The Electric Blue African Cichlid does well with other Lake Malawi cichlids when provided with a spacious, rocky tank of 70 gallons or more.
If consistently fed a diet too high in protein auratus and other Malawi cichlids can develop a condition known as "Malawi bloat".
This species is found in all parts of Lake Malawi, it has always been a favourite with enthusiasts that keep Malawi cichlids. They are known for there peaceful behaviour, stunning blue colouring, and the hump on the males head adds to its appeal.
Aquarium behavior: Labeotropheus species are members of the Mbuna group of Lake Malawi cichlids. In the aquarium, Mbuna enjoy a rocky structure--the more the better.
Others fall from grace - I can remember a time when Malawi cichlids were much bigger than they are now in 2003 (well, in the UK at least).

However, as with all African Cichlids their aggression should be respected and not underestimated.
Again, as with most Malawi Cichlids you should provide caves and/or densely populated plants for territory.
Although fairly rare in Lake Malawi, it has become fairly common in the aquarium trade and is popular for its appearance and its less aggressive nature as a Malawi cichlid.
