The marbled hatchetfish found in the local fish store are all caught in the wild - they have been spawned, but not on a commercial basis.

Marbled Hatchetfish are egg-layers, females are fuller, and will often swell with eggs. Live foods are used to condition a breeding pair. The breeding tank water should have a ph of 6.0. You will need floating plants and peat if possible.

The Marbled Hatchetfish is most noted for its unmistakable shape. Its big, round belly gives it a triangular body shape. This fish has long, winglike pectoral fins, which it uses to propel itself through the air when they leap from the water.

Distribution Found mostly in small forest streams in Guyana and the Amazon River basin.

The Marbled Hatchet fish, is a small, freshwater ray-finned fish native to South America and is common in the aquarium industry. Like most Amazonian fish, the species prefers softer, acidic water.

Availability: The Common Hatchetfish is readily available. They are somewhat more expensive than the Marbled Hatchetfish but are also a hardier species which makes them worth the extra price.
